How is a Nikon D7000 for a first camera? Any limitations or anything I should know about? Overall seems like a pretty bad ass camera, no?

If you're going to be mostly shooting video, go with an equally priced Canon. I have a Nikon and love the photos, but the video sucks. Even the newer ones its pretty bad. I think the t3i is about the same price?

This. If you want an SLR, get either canon or nikon so you'll never be limited when it comes to lenses and stuff. If you want it to do video as well as photos, go with a canon. Canon is way better for video than Nikon. I own a nikon for photos and I love it. Nikon has a cropped sensor (only the very expensive nikons and canons are not cropped sensor) fisheye lens, and I don't think canon does. Something to consider anyways.

Get a 5dMk2 and the EF 8-15, sorted.
It'll only set you back what.... probably abut $2,500. Great starter kit. And then you can get a sigma 200-400 once you understand how to change the megapixels.

Once you know what you're doing, get a Holga, best camera out today.

To echo the other responses, it really comes down to whether you want to shoot just video, just photos, or both. The D7000 is a great photo camera but it's pretty limited for video. Its Canon competitor/equivalent would roughly be the 60D.
Keep in mind that for SLR's, whether you're shooting video or photo, the body is only part of the equation. It needs to be part of a good overall kit/system to really function well.... mostly meaning lenses, but also things like lights/flashes, audio, support, etc... all things that add up quick. So adjust your budget likewise.

I just bought a Canon EOS 7D. Now I am saving up for the lens. I'm going to go with the 15mm - 85mm...hopefully it'll be on sale before school starts
I feel like the one aspect thats over looked with the T3i is the flip lcd screen. It's makes filming moving shots much easier depending on positioning and your angle. It shouldn't be a deal breaker, but it is some serious convenience to consider.

Word, well that's some good input, I have the opportunity to get a very good condition used one for 1000, though I deifnitely am more concerned with video than pictures... Don't know if I can float a new one. Is it risky to buy a used t2i or similar canon online?

Also, how's the T2i vs the T3i?

550D (T2i) is more popular, but the 600D (T3i) is a much more down to earth person. I'd recommend buying both and then binning the one you prefer, just to be sure.

I like cameras.
My friend has the Canon 60D which seems very capable for video (and photos too, of course). It's nice to use and can handle video very well. I would look into buying one of those used.

I had a dream on Christmas Eve that I got the Nikon D3s that I've been wanting. My first dream thought was, "YES!" followed by, "Now I need new lenses."
