View Full Version : anyone know of odd/exciting jobs that make bank?
Entry level stuff though. I'm talking like oil drilling, mining, high rise window washing, deep sea commercial fishing, something that involves helicopters etc etc.
jobs where youre in a cool location, work your ass off for like 8 months or whatever, and make lots of money?
not having to spend money for start up would be nice too.

If you like heights, constructing/erecting cell towers pays bank. I worked at a hotel where a crew of guys were staying for a few months that worked 6 days per week, 12+ hrs. a day and made about $1,000 per day.
No idea what the company name was, though.
not exciting. i was offered a job at a credit card manufacturing plant. pouring plastic was the bulk, but the interesting stuff was the magnet strips.
i never looked into it after the conversation involving the offer, so i can't give you any insight. not exciting, but different. the pay/benefits were pretty solid
cell tower stuff seems like you would need certification. but yes, i like heights.
maybe an ocean going trash barge or some shit. i dont know.

oil rigs, crab fishing, trash barges?
Are you actively seeking an industry where you don't get laid often due to work patterns? I used to think that I needed an exciting and fruitful job, but after taking a pain free opportunity and working in an office for a few months (~$20 an hour) I've realized that my time is the only thing I'm trading here as I am still young and not sure what I want in life. There is a lot of different ways to make money, but I'm glad I don't bust my ass daily and have an adequate salary fresh out of college. I'll take the exciting stuff when I figure out what I want.

Become a Mexican kidnapper.
Odd because it's bad, exciting because you get to evade the authorities, makes bank because it's kidnapping.

Defense contractor.
JK'ing, that takes experience. My uncle makes 160,000 fixing vehicles in Afghanistan
Wyoming is full of methane rigs. My roommate used to work on one and almost got his hand cut off one day. A few of his fingers were barely attached after getting his glove stuck in a giant drill.
You could try out for my superorganized militia that'll run this city as soon as I've earned enough to organize it. Start slinging now if you lack experience with guns and explosives. Oh and like in proffesional rollerblading I won't provide insurance, but unlike the bladers you'll earn bank.
The cell/radio tower thing is intense. You can make a shit load, but its hard dangerous work. Dudes are super protective of their techniques and stuff. Its kinda cool.
Navy is super cool
electronic warfare is freaking awesome.

Can bounty hunters still roll around and deliver justice?
Wait, never mind. Probably need an associate's for that nowadays.
Is possible prison time included in this equation?

Storage Warrior.
I worked for an airline for like 7 years. You don't make bank right away, but if you're down to put some time in you can work your way up to decent dough.
The job was ill as fuck though. Towing airplanes, talking on the radio saying cool shit like "copy" .....and this shit is the shit right here (if you live in a wintery climate)

was just looking for something exciting for a somewhat temporary yet insanely hard work. just because.
dont know what i was expecting
military wont due as i have a drug record.
i wanted to join the peace corps or something like that but they only let people with a bachelors or higher in. go volunteer in some country, shit like that.

Bachelors + teaching english somewhere weird in the world never seemed like a bad option to me.
If you don't have the education, I'd seriously just haul balls towards the Deadliest Catch route. Get a prescription for amphetamine salts, set your mind on spending your hard earned pay on something epic, get on a boat and just pretend you're with Ahab. Write a letter in to the show or a crew talking a bunch of shit like you're a boss and just want to catch crab and stack paper and go in with the proper mindset. Nothing could go wrong.
I want to take the opportunity to post a video of climbing high shit, if you don't mind - this needed a repost.

Enroll into college in the Northeast or Southwest of the country, befriend rich kid - feed of their parent's contacts.
Pretend you're an expert at something.
Teach other people about it for more money than you are worth.
Worked for me.

Also, everything I gained from researching those climbing positions pointed in the direction that it is almost impossible to find a gig somewhere with a company that gives solid hours and pays properly. Small talent pool + small worker demand = hard to find a job with solid security.

 That is a great idea. I have had several opportunities to do this, happened last thursday in fact. If only flyfishing was as big here as in America, I'd fish and tie flies every day while making bank.

Drop some knowledge
get whatever ridiculous certification is needed
Euro accent
???
Profit.
If you have half a brain and get a TEFL certification (4 week course-- $1500+/-) you can make bank in South Korea or Japan, and pretty decent money in Taiwan and some other parts of China, or make shit money but live somewhere dope like Spain. And yeah since its teaching its usually only 8 months out of the year.

Yeah I do have to become a certified guide, but I don't think I'd have problems becoming one. 'Wegions are very well known for being excellent flyfishermen, and 5 years in the business would help my CV.
Dunno how much guides make though...I know guides fishing tropical are hella expensive, so maybe PROFIT???

Out of curiosity, have you ever been ice fishing Espen?
Out of curiosity, have you ever been ice fishing Espen?
No I've actually never done that. I'm usually hammered during the winter, due to my obsession with alcohol :D I've only been flyfishing for the last 6 years, and after that any other kind of fishing doesn't do the same to my mental health...it's like swapping heroin for chewing gum.
EDIT: Going fishing now 8-)

yea, the start up capitol is hurting me. im broke
even all the volunteer opportunities you need like 2 grand for.
and Espen, you dont really need to be certified. some first responder/aid/cpr shit would be nice but not needed.
I went to canon city with my buddy and ended up gettin a job as a raft guide for the summer. no experience whatsoever.
customers by me beer all the time, good tips, and you just chill on the river with yuppies. sometimes i flip the raft on purpose, gives them city folk an extra thrill.
fly fishing in CO is no joke though. mad places need guides.
alaska is cool though.

I am a highrise window cleaner. We also change out banners, bulbs, pressure wash, and anything someone can think of that needs us to jump off of something high. It is a job that sounds alot more extreem than it is but we do occasionally get into some sketchy shit. I do most of my work hanging from a rope on a skygenie(similar to a bolson chair)really high up. You will get thrown off a building either your first or second day on the job. Whether or not you do it will determine if they hire you obviously. I have seen many a self proclaimed daredevil who claims to have no fear of heights fail to jump. I have seen dudes talk mad shit, get up to the edge, and freeze up. Whether or not you, "make bank," depends on the company and area you work. I have heard some places pay hourly starting @ $15 an hour. I would go work at Burger King before I would do what I do for that little. I am the lowest man on the totem pole meaning I get the shit jobs and I still brought home $875 this week. We have a couple doods that clear 70k a year.

Male escort.
A friend of mine does this. He was saying most of the time his clients are just workaholic 40 something business women. He works for an agency and they take a percentage of every job he does. He doesnt always bone his customers, sometimes its just dinner and date shit. But, when he does fuck he has to rock their world. If he doesnt, hes liable to get fired by his agency. £700 for a few hours work.
