you are right, Aesop Rock does deserve respect, his lyricism is craaaaazy. but hip hop grew up where ASAP Rocky grew up, out of experiences that ASAP Rocky shares. The word legit doesn't just mean "his musical abilities are exemplary." It also means "his background falls within the social and historical context appropriate to the creation of this art form." or, it can be equated to "street credibility."

aesop rock is not more legit than ASAP Rocky. also, as hard as it is for music fiend suburb kids to believe, it is quite possible that ASAP rocky never heard of aesop rock. the "underground hip hop" scene invented by doomtree in the early 2000s was pretty antagonistic to mainstream hiphop, so why would mainstream hiphop pay attention to it? aint no aesop rock on worldstar.

I put "underground" in quotes because ASAP Rocky's biggest influences, DJ screw and houston hip hop, are pretty fucking underground by definition, just not from the same rhetorical underground that had atmosphere rapping about riding bikes and middle class kids saying "this is real hip hop!"
