He obviously has knowledge of Aesop Rock but he also has a reason I guess to call himself that. So yes he was aware and probably chose that name as a means to turn confusion =curiosity =checking out one of his songs. Rappers will pretty much do anything now for attention.. e.g, Odd Future, Lil B etc..

a$ap - always strive and prosper (his crew)
rocky - short for his real name (as stated) which is rakim

His nickname is Rocky, and he joined a group called A$AP; get over it.

I have no idea who this Asap Rocky dude is, but just wanted to point out that Rocky is not at all short for Rakim. 5 letters. I also refuse to know who he is based on the fact that it IS a blatant rip off of Aesop Rock. It would be like trying to be a band with the name Metalika, Nirvina, Beetles, or some other variation of someone similar. Dude can eat a bag of dicks on his way to obscurity.

His real name is Rakim, his mother named him that after the rapper. So his alias is Rocky.

okay, everyone hates my musical taste on this board, but seriously listen to yourselves: "don't hate on Aesop Rock, a white guy who grew up in long island and went to school in massachusetts, because he is more legit than a$ap Rocky, a black kid who grew up drinking 40s in harlem."

i think they're both good, no hate, but don't you think you sound a little ridiculous?

Maybe you should listen to yourself?
So hip hop is about where you grew up now?

Drinking 40's in Harlem does not make you a better Emcee, nor a musician.

Questlove grew up on the road with his touring musician parents and attended a school for the creative arts.
Tupac went to multiple arts schools in various cities.

Aesop deserves the respect for his back catalogue of work and his skill.

Are you fucking retarded? It's a blatant ripoff of the name, regardless of what kind of music they make. If I started a metal band called 3 Doors Downstairs, it would still be a blatant ripoff.

It's a blatant ripoff of the name.

again, its not...

ASAP is more than 1 person.

ASAP Rocky
ASAP Twelvyy
ASAP Nast
ASAP Ty
ASAP Ferg
ASAP Yams

its as if coincidences never existed. aesop rock himself has expressed no hate / problem over this.

do your homework.

hhhjjjkkklll
02.06.2012, 16:18
A$ap Rocky should have done his homework before dubbing himself that when they're is clearly another decently well known rapper with a same sounding moniker...

the rmdy
02.06.2012, 16:36
jon elliot & gang should have done their homework before creating ground control, when there is clearly another decently well known car suspension company with the exact same name.

slipknot got their name jacked by the nu metal band, incubus got their name jacked by that alternative band, slaughter got their name jacked by the hair metal band, nirvana (60's band), got their name jacked by curt kobain & friends...

coincidences exist, so do blatant ripoffs - know the difference

hhhjjjkkklll
02.06.2012, 16:54
Jon elliots company and the car company are two completely different markets.

Slipknot and some other band i have no idea what your talking about same with incubus and same with slaughter. nirvana was 30 years apart from each other..

That's cool, but the similar names are just a coincidence and their music isn't even the same. That means it's not a blatant rip off, and if you can't understand that then you might be fucking retarded.

you are right, Aesop Rock does deserve respect, his lyricism is craaaaazy. but hip hop grew up where ASAP Rocky grew up, out of experiences that ASAP Rocky shares. The word legit doesn't just mean "his musical abilities are exemplary." It also means "his background falls within the social and historical context appropriate to the creation of this art form." or, it can be equated to "street credibility."

aesop rock is not more legit than ASAP Rocky. also, as hard as it is for music fiend suburb kids to believe, it is quite possible that ASAP rocky never heard of aesop rock. the "underground hip hop" scene invented by doomtree in the early 2000s was pretty antagonistic to mainstream hiphop, so why would mainstream hiphop pay attention to it? aint no aesop rock on worldstar.

edit. p.s. I put "underground" in quotes because ASAP Rocky's biggest influences, DJ screw and houston hip hop, are pretty fucking underground by definition, just not from the same rhetorical underground that had atmosphere rapping about riding bikes and middle class kids saying "this is real hip hop!"

I really don't think someone would be so enamored with the name "Aesop Rock" that they would try to duplicate that. It's not a super cool sounding name or anything.

I saw something about a rapper named LA the Darkman the other day though and that FOR SURE is an RA the Rugged man ripoff. Which I can totally see, because that name is dope.

Just saying the words Asap Rocky sounds stupid. But I guess he was smart in a way, he chose a name that would spark controversy thus bringing attention to him. I'm sure this was already argued by hip hop heads and shit. If you like him, listen to him. I personally don't care for him he looks and sounds like an asshole. But that's just my opinion.
