View Full Version : What do you do if somebody hits their head?
I figured since practically no rollerbladers (or skaters in general) like to wear helmets this would be some pretty good information. I'm also slightly paranoid because I just watched Cameron Card's Blood, Pride, and True section and the KFC sections. So, what do you do if someone you're skating with gets a concussion or even starts bleeding?
Any or all of the below
- Stand around and do nothing
- Keep asking if he's alright even if he's not responding
- Try to get him conscious by violent shaking, slapping and shouting
- Scream OH MY GOD HE'S DEAD/GOING TO DIE
- Take pics and post them on FB
- Most importantly, KEEP FILMING AND STAND AROUND LIKE A WET BLANKET!!!
If your noggin takes a proper wallop it's probably in your best interests to seek medical attention as a precautionary measure. Apply ice and/or pressure to a wound. You should not go to sleep for a good while after hitting your head because if you go unconscious due to swelling nobody would be able to tell, someone should "supervise" the person for a couple days. If the person has a concussion they shouldn't do a single thing...not even playing video games.
Brain injuries have been severe or deadly to multiple people in blading so better safe than sorry. If youre paranoid about head injuries at least make sure the people you roll with arent the type who stand there with their GL2 going "dammmmn" as you bleed out on the floor.

there are magical creatures called doctors. they live in strange mountains made of brick and metal, with metallic creatures they enslave to do their bidding. They have a queer way about them and can fix ailments. although, much like a troll, they require a hefty toll

ask them if they're having flashbacks about Captain Planet
just be like "Bro you alright?" and then help him up and convince him to try one more time while he's still dazed.

1) Panic
2) Walk away slowly
3) ????
4) Facebook?
If a dude hits his head, go to the hospital to get it checked. A concussion might happen even from a hit that didn't seem too hard.
If he starts bleeding like, for example, Brandon Mateer in KFC, call the fucking ambulance.
It's good that you are asking.
You'll know automatically if you should call an ambulance. Otherwise, it's a good idea to go to a doctor anyway. Don't fuck around with head injuries!
Quark, you are such a fucking douchebag!

This is actually why I asked, because that's what it seems like EVERYONE does. I mean when Cameron Card hit his head the filmer just casually strolls over, "Ya okay?" ... "Oh shit. Well Imma just gingerly put my hand on your and crouch down, maybe that'll help."

My main concern was what to do right when he/she hits their head. Do they elevate it? Do they lie down? Do they sit? I mean obviously no jerky movements, but do you want their head elevated or not? I do know doctors are a must if it's bad.

Thanks man, appreciate it. I just don't like standing around not knowing what the hell to do when something bad happens. Not a good feeling man.
Oh and Quark I just forgot to sign my rep I gave you. I said you hit the nail on the head.
I swear every time someone says not to go to sleep after a head injury, I want to kick them. Going to sleep is not going to change a damn thing. The important part is if they can be woken up. Sleep actually aids in healing. As far as when to call an ambulance, . Loss of consciousness, severe neck or back pain, bleeding from the ears, numbness or tingling in the extremities, all bad signs. If in doubt, just call, it doesn't mean they have to be transported.

people say not to sleep because if you have a concussion and go to sleep, you could slip into a coma.

Unless the person is having convulsions or bleeding badly, it would be best to keep the person from moving incase they have done damage to their c1 or c2 vertabrae.
Call paramedics
check they are breathing
Keep them calm and stop them from going into shock
Ask them questions to guage if they have suffered concussion
I also bring a snap/chemical icepack if I or anyone needs it.

This. If someone hits their head, put a helmet on.
The two times I've ever hit my head.
First, in California:

Then about a week later in DC:

Also, when someone else hits their head, don't do what I almost did, which is take them to Taco Bell because Taco Bell has a bathroom with a sink. Keep them relaxed and keep them talking. Just because they seem normal right after the impact doesn't mean they're okay. It might be a while later when all of a sudden they aren't making sense anymore.

Hmmm...
Yeah this thread is retarded. Duke Nukem bedspread retarded.
What do you do if anybody gets seriously injured?
Take the man to the nearest hospital.
I get it though. Bladers are GED wannabes.
Most likely, their initial response is to ask rhetorical questions, give dap to the poor unconscious bastard, instagram it for iStreetcred, poor some beer and burgers on his feet, and laugh about the whole thing 15 years later when they're all pet therapists waiting for their tightass, rich parents to die so they can collect their house and turn the bathroom they learned to poop in into a room to poop on gay men and women in.

Gotta love living in a high tax economy with one of the best (free) healthcare systems in the world.
Basically if it's not so bad let them sit down and maybe go see a doctor later.
In all other situations drive the guy to the hospital or call an ambulance if you need doctors immediatly

check the pupils.
if one is dialated larger than the other it could mean that the person has suffered from a concussion and needs immediate medical attention.
take the persons drivers liscense and ask for their full name/address/date of birth. Could also indicate the severity of the injury

in my experience you wake up in a daze surrounded by little skateboard kids and couple of their parents, they guide you out of the skatepark over to the bleachers in a dreamlike state, the fire department comes, asks if you have health insurance, when you reply with 'no' they tell you to have your friend drive you to the hospital then they leave. the hospital then offers you a 75% discount for paying in cash/card vs insurance.
after that I wore a helmet full time, now I wear a helmet whenever I'm going to be dropping in
I'd say if someone is knocked out at all you should take them to the hospital
It's weird to think of the costs not being a factor on going to the hospital or not
it's also weird to think that anyone else should have to pay for me hitting my head while rollerblading
so what do we do then
Keep an eye on them, if they lose consciousness, experience severe head, neck or back pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities(arms and legs), have altered mental status(confusion, repetitive questioning, etc.) have severe other injuries, call 911. It really depends on the height of the fall and how hard they fell, as well as the angle. If you don't know or are questioning yourself, just call 911. The medics don't have to transport the person, but they will assess the patient and make recommendations.

wear a helmet
I think i've had around 9 concussions. 2 non skating related, and the others from hitting my head mad hard skating, usually on gaps. It's the reason I have eye floaters everywhere all day-everyday and all sorts of other mental health issues. I think the worst one I've ever experienced was in one of IFT's edits, couldn't see for like an hour, thought I was going blind forever. All I remember was clipping a ledge and falling so far to the front of my head, and blake kelly taking me to his car and blasting the AC, that helped... It's not fun, and I seriously wish nobody ever has to go through anything like this. Inevitable though...

I'd say not skating, getting rich or preparing to get rich somewhere in Utah. I think he's working out and climbing a lot and super into snowboarding based on his posts before leaving.
He realized this place went down the shitter for like the 10th time and dipped out.
I pm'd him to try to catch up in case the pm would appear in his e-mail. No reply. Wonder if he still lurks.

This can't be stressed enough. This dude Frank used to come out mudding with all the bladers in Ft. Myers years ago. He was drunk, tried to ride on the back of a truck, fell off, and hit his head. He seemed ok but given how hard he hit his head I kept telling the dudes he rode with to bring him to the ER. They promised they would but brought him home anyways. Dude fell out sometime that night and never came out of it. He was a vegatable and pretty sure he passed away not long after.
Last time I hit my head I felt fine and told the bikers who came to my aid at the park I was cool. I got in my car and left the park thinking everything was fine. When I woke up for work the next day I felt fine and showed up thinking I was all good. My work partner kept asking if I was ok, had I been drinking, did I feel alright, and I was like, "what is he talking about?" Turned out I was slurring my words and kinda stumbling around. I was carrying my equipment up some stairs and just fell down. When I tried to get up It felt like I was on a boat in heavy seas. I went to the ER and they ran some physical tests on me. The doc got super nervous acting and ordered immediate scans to make sure I wasn't bleeding. It took over a week for my speech to return to normal. I would try to say something and I know I knew the right words but I couldn't remember them. I would be talking and just blank out as well as having no balance and frequent dizzy spells. I was out of work for over 2 weeks.
Sooooo yeah, go to the doctor if you hit your head.
Ask if they want a beer? idk

With my experience, if you hit your head and lose consciousness whilst fucking around in a contest trying a disaster ufo, you apparently continue skating. Then, you drive Sean Cullen and Erik Bailey to Herben Legend's apartment where they get high. Then you drive to some rich girl's house where Cullen can fuck her. Then you wake up on a couch in a strange place with a family eating breakfast 10 feet away and staring at you. Then, you drive 6 hours back home to take Sean and Erik skating. I had to drive because neither of them had a license and apparently they thought i was ok even though I don't remember anything from the time I caught my foot on the a-box and waking up on some rich family's couch.
i hit my head for the first time today, it was really fucking gay. all i was doing was a pornstar to fakie, on a stupid little fucking thigh high rail at one of my local parks. it's my second time skating xsjados, so im not really used to all the flex coming from SLs. i do the porn, turn fakie, roll about 3 or 4 feet, and just fall backward. i dont know if i caught my frame on the ground or if i got wheel bite from a rock or something, but as i was falling back all i was thinking was "ok this is fine, ill just roll and do a backwards somersault, might hit my knees on the recovery but its fine." and then just NOPE. smacked my head.
as soon as i smacked my head i yelled "FUCK" not out of pain, but because i was thinking of this goddamn thread. like, what the fuck am i gonna do now if i just start pouring blood? i really dont wanna go to the hospital. i also heard my own head smack the ground. well i hit my head, and sat back up. i saw stars a little bit but i felt fine. the only part of my head that hurt was the part that i hit - no residual pain. i was just sitting there making sure i wasnt bleeding. it's really weird. my head doesn't really hurt at all and there is no bump or anything.
soooo am i gonna be fine? or does this mean my brain is bleeding and when i fall asleep i wont wake up?
A mate of mine hit his head really bad. Some of the older be-fags may remember the footage.
I had to plug the hole in his head with my thumb. He was in a coma for 2 weeks. He recovered fine.
I would re-upload it but ironically, the dude who has the original tape is currently in a coma.
Well it's a good thing I made this thread because my friend hit his head crowd-surfing really bad yesterday.
Story is is that we were all at Warped tour yesterday (screamo/deathmetal concert with maybe one or two rappers, they listen to the music and dragged me along), and we had gone through the whole day (7:00 A.M. to 8:10 p.m.) and him, another friend and I decide to go catch Rise Against while the rest of the group kicks back and waits for us. So a couple songs in my super buff friend and my other friend grab me buy my legs and try to throw me up to crowd surf and I'm not having it so I thrash around and shit but then get thrown by an even bigger dude. Luckily I didn't get hurt or anything and got let down pretty quickly. So I get revenge on my friend and throw him up there and he goes pretty far and is having a blast up until some dude throws him straight into the mosh pit and he falls like 6 feet straight onto his head.
He got fucked up. I couldn't get him to sit down or anything because he was practically running out of there, but long story short he's going to the doctor today.
TL:DR Friend is crowd surfing, dude throws him into the mosh pit and he lands straight on his head.
