Thread: things to do in Charleston, SC?

Default things to do in Charleston, SC?

my wife and i are driving to Charleston, SC for a week long vacation during the first half of October. we are staying downtown. what is there to do in the area besides go to the beach? and is October too cold on the Atlantic? i've never been to the east coast.

any good museums, zoos, restaurants, etc. that can be recommended? any good free skateparks? and does anyone know if there are any good dog parks that aren't nazis about letting in out of state dogs?

I love kids. They're short, highly emotional people who don't know anything. They rely on their creativity and imagination to get by in the world. A world, I might add, filled with giants. Amazing feat.

Just your typical tourist stuff. They do tours of some of the haunted places, if you're into that sort of thing.

My fiance and are have been going there for a few years. You have to hit up the open air market on market st. (can't miss it). Then head to a bike rental place and get a 2- seater. Head around all of downtown to check out the shops and restaurants. The battery is a must see as well. You can check out all of the mutli- million dollar houses in the area and see quite a few high end cars as well (assuming you can see over a wall/ through a gate...). I would definitely hit the beach, battleship, and aquarium if I couldn't entertain myself during the day.

At night, there are places all over downtown: wine bars, rooftop bars, seafood on the water, and great live music from blues to cajun. If you're into it, you could head over to Mt. Pleasant as well. There is shopping all through downtown including Mont Blanc, Gucci, Ralph Lauren and a lot of other high end stores (and of course your regular Ann Taylor, Sacks 5th, etc.).

Last but not least, the plantations and their gardens in Charleston and the surrounding areas are amazing. Go.

But the bike is the way to go and October is in no way too cold. It'll probably be really nice.

Its the greatest city in the South. I'm not so good at recommending tourist stuff to to b/c i was born and raised there and never really do any of that. 2 weeks ago was my first time actually shopping at the Market in like 8 years. But it is definately something you as a tourist should do. The Charleston Museum (meeting st.) is the oldest museum in the US. You can go there to see the Hunley submarine and some other stuff. But the best thing there is the handicapped rail out front Go to the bars on King, East Bay and Market St. My boys own Johnson's Pub so check it out if you are in the East Bay area (its actually on Cumberland). They usually have live music. If you want to have a good time but would rather have a nice glass of wine then go to The Social on East Bay St. For seafood go to Hank's, Fleets Landing, or The Boathouse. Avoid Hyman's as its just a tourist trap and is not nearly as good these other places. Other great restaurants include S.N.O.B., Virginia's, Rue de Jean, High Cotton, Jestine's, Magnolia's, Carolina's, Hominy Grill etc. The prices/styles of cooking very so just check them out online and see what works for you. If you go to the beach, go to Folly (instead of Isle of Palms/Sullivan's Island). Its more of the local beach and you'll get a better feeling for Charleston.

Idk what else to say. If you have any specific questions just PM me. I'll probably be able to tell you whatever you need to know.

any skate parks other than the one in North Charleston? that place looks booty, i don't want to go to it. anywhere to skate in or around Folly Beach? we were planning on going there a few times to flop at the beach and let our dog swim in the water.

Honestly, if I were you I would just leave my skates in the car while you are in Charleston. Just relax. If you skate at all I would say just go to Maritime Center. But you might be more dedicated to rolling than I am so I'll give you the word.

There are no parks besides N. Chuck and you're right, that one blows. You can try your hand at some street spots but most of them are busts. Everything is pretty much 6pm-dark to avoid security. As I said, the Charleston Museum has a perfect handicapped rail and also a little ledge that goes out over 4 or 5 stairs. Across the street from that is the Visitor's Center which doubles as a make-shift skatepark at night. Its all skateboarders but if you're around there you should go check it out and see what they have set up (it changes). There is a nice handicapped rail on Eastbay at some bank across from the post office. Waterfront Park has some ill curved marble ledges but be weary of the police. You might want to go down there anyway to let your dog run around and hangout w/ your lady. There is a dock there that goes out into the harbor and has some nice bench swings and stuff. It is always a clutch place to take a stroll after a nice dinner on East Bay. There is an awesome ledge spot right by the Aquarium/Ft. Sumter building. Its a line of 8 ledges each about 10 ft long and 2½ ft. apart. The first two are waxed so you can transfer. Then one or two of the middle ones are waxed and the last one so you can do lines. The first and last ledges are lit up at night and they have a super cold water fountain. It's at the Maritime Center and is probably your best bet at a fun session w/o trouble. If you venture 10 minutes away from downtown there is a big rail going off the Wapoo Creek Bridge which connects West Ashely to James Island. Its about 40 stairs and is pretty mellow. There is a little kink in the middle but its big enough to go through and small enough to hop. Its not really a bust but a lot of times ppl. will have their trucks/boat trailers parked in front of the landing. On Folly there are really only 2 spots. One is a perfect stair rail in someone's front yard. Idk if you want to be doing sketchy things like that w/ your woman, but it's on west ashley street heading towards the Wash Out (surf spot that starts at 13th block). The other spot is at the Pavillion right next to the big Holiday Inn on the beach. Perfect drop off rails that arent very high. The run up is sketchy b/c the ground is planked wood and you have to skate it at night.
