depends on what you are looking for. by slr i assume you want a digital slr. if you are just getting into photography, i recommend the nikon d5000 or d3000, thats a good starter dslr. if you are looking for a film slr, pentax k1000, but if you plan on really getting into photography, i recommend staying within one brand (i.e. i have a film nikon and a digital nikon, thus i can use most of my lenses on both cameras). canon's are good too, its just that i started with nikon and have kept with it because i cant afford to switch all my glass out for a different brand if switched. so, yeah:

there are a lot of unimaginable deals on the internet for cameras. you see them for sale for like $200 or more cheaper than anywhere else. AVOID THESE AT ALL COST. they are scams. i would stick to either b&h, adorama, amazon, or ritz. taht being said, i would look for a good used camera body at these online retailers' used departments. you can get a good used body and have more money left over to get a good lens and maybe even a flash

Do some research, go with Canon or Nikon, that's what most of us do. Go to a local store and see how they feel in your hand.

If your total budget is $1200 and you;re looking to shoot skating and/or have a wireless flash setup, I'd go used. Grab a Nikon D70 or D200, or a Canon 40D.
Then grab some basic lenses: a 50mm 1.8, a mid/wide-ish zoom (nikon 18-70 is pretty nice, not sure for canon), and a telephoto (70-200 or so). In NIkon you can get a 70-210 f4-5.6 or 70-210 f4 for cheap and both are nice lenses. I would wait to get a fisheye (assuming you want one for skating), learn the basics first, don't be one of those kids who gets a fisheye and never takes it off!
Get a decent tripod, some light stands, some used manual flashes and one of the mid-range radio-trigger systems (Elinchrom Skyport or Paul C Buff CyberSyncs). You could do this all for $1200, maybe $1300.
i agree you should buy a used body. you can get a d80 used for about $400 and that camera can pretty much do it all! then i would buy a used 70-300mm (the non VR version- if youre shooting sports with it the VR is useless) which can be bought for about $250. Then I would go to amazon and buy (possibly 2) vivitar 285 flashes and some cheap lightstands to go with them. you can get the cactus trigger set for about $40 to set the flashes off-camera (if you want to get more reliable ones i recommend the paul c buff cybersyncs, they are a bit more expensive) the nikon 18-55 is a great lens and it can get pretty wide which is fun for skating. this lens also can be bought for under $300. i would wait before buying a tripod. you may choose to do photography that doesnt require it, but if you do decide to buy one, try to spend about $150 at least so you get a solid one. when you buy a camera bag i suggest buying one in backpack form instead of a shoulder bag. its waaay easier to carry around, especially in skates. enjoy it though, its really cool
theres a little neighborhood photo store next to my home skatepark that has a d80 that looks in pretty good condition, i think it was 550?

i would really like a d90 though( my friend has one and i love it) but it seems you all come to the conclusion of getting a used one so im def. going to look into it.

and i have a decent bag right now that i use for my canon hf21. The bags perfect size, and i skate everywhere with it, i think it should have enough room for a camera also cause my camcorder is not big at all

There's a green Canon bag that's always on Amazon for cheap, about $40 or so, it'd be a good size for your HF and the photo stuff.
I would avoid getting the "eBay" aka Cactus triggers, they're a pain in the ass. Just go for Cybersyncs, you can get two flashes running for about $200, and they'll be reliable.
$550 for a D80 seems a little high to me but I'm not up on the resale prices of that body. If you're going to shoot skating you might want to consider grabbing a D70 instead, as it has a much higher flash sync speed (aka better for freezing the skater).
I have a Nikon 70-210 f4 that I've been meaning to put on eBay, actually I think I still have my 70-210 f4-5.6 too haha. I actually have my D70 still too, I haven't shot with it in months though. I may consider selling that as well. I'll have to see what they're going for and let you know what I'd want.

so should i get a nikon d70 or d80,
because the mp difference between the 2 is like 4 mp and id rather a higher mp because im not only going to be using it for skating, i will be taking some photography pictures and going out to my little bros sports events and taking some action shots also, but i guess that still falls under the whole freeze frame concept.
any comments?
6MP is fine for anything but huge prints (over 16x20 or so). So that alone is not really reason to go for the D80. However, the D80 is a slightly better body than the D70 in most other ways, other than the sync speed, which is much higher on the D70 and thus better for shooting action with flashes.
I will do a little research and see what my stuff should go for and I will post here.
MP means nothing you cant tell the difference between a 6mp and a 12mp unless you blow it up like poster size then its not that noticeable

What Dub already said, MP are used as a marketing tool by camera companies to make the camera sound better. In some cases trying to cram more megapixels onto the sensor can do more harm to image quality than it can good.

that d80 body i said that was at that local camera shop is 500 not 550, so does that sound a little better or should i still go with a d70? and i went in today to look at the flashes and the lady i was talking to said i should get the same brand of flashes as the camera, should i do that because the 600 she had was like 250 and i can get 2 vivtar flashes for 170?
so what should i do?

get the vivitars if you plan on using them off camera.
depends what vivitars, make sure they have manual power output, if not do not buy.
also
try to get some with sync ports, if not you will have to buy a hot shoe adapter
