i did a little test a few minutes ago.

1/400, the line starts to appear.
Would someone mind explaining this x-sync stuff to me? I'm a little lost!

x-sync aka flash sync Is the fastest shutter speed available while using flashes with your camera. If your cameras x-sync is 1/90, then you can only take pics using your flash with shutter speeds up to 1/90 of a second.

For 35mm cameras, 1/300 is the fastest X-Sync available, while some medium format cameras and DSLR cameras can sync up to 1/500.

My Fuji S20 pro appears to be able to use flash up to 1/10000. Am I doing something wrong (were you perhaps only referring to slave flash as opposed to the camera's built in flash) or do I just have a very good camera?

Shutter speed and x-sync are two different things...
You were looking at what your cameras max shutter speed was, which is 1/10000.
I looked at the specs of your cam on the internet and it actually never said what x-sync your camera shoots at...

Here are the specs for my cam, and you can see by the max shutter speed it says what my cameras x-sync is...

and just to confuse things even more some high end SLRs have 2 x-sync speeds. one for any flash that can be connected (1/250) and a second for the dedicated flash with reduced output(1/8000).

    x-sync on the s20 pro is 1/1000s
the odd thing is that the manual does not state a sync speed although there are a few referances to using flash up to 1/1000s
This may because of the s20 laking in a mechanical shutter and doing it all in electronics.

Thanks for helping me out you guys, but I'm still confused. As a test, I just set my shutter to 1/10000, turned the built in flash on, and took a picture. Everything worked fine. I then attatched an external flash to the hotshoe and took a pic, still with the same shutter speed. On both instances the flash fired, and the picture was perfectly exposed. What's going on here?

the manual says the MAY be dark if taken over 1/1000s - Fuji realy dont seem to tie the issue down.

Was the photo of an object close by or at the max flash distance?

Well it's the middle of the night here, but I just tried taking a pic of one corner of my room, from the opposite corner (distance of about 15 feet) with the same settings as before, and although the picture was slightly underexposed, it was perfectly visible and all the detail was clear.

Steve from Scarborough - topsoul stall

Rich Taylor - soul stall 360 to bank

Me - halfcab makio stall (obviously I didn't press the shutter, but I did basically everything else!)

Ben Sylvestre - disaster Truespin topside pornstar

    Tim Toase - fastslide

Danny Farmeary - Bank to Fishbrain

I'm going street skating in Leeds tomorrow, so I should be able to get some non-skatepark photos that I won't have to B+W to disguise the horrible light and garish coloured graffiti!
