Sturmey Archer never died though, but all the hackers have modded the hubs for so long, it figures they would do this eventually.

so the gears go -37%, -25%, and direct? does that mean it goes lower for hills and such. say i were running a 53x16 on that hub, what would the lower gears be equal to? i am terrible with cycling math.

I'm glad I opened this thread and went to that link... it led me to this bike, which I think I'm gonna get:

Can't knock it for the price. I'm sure it will be a fun ride.

that's funny, because you and a couple other people i know came to mind when i saw that bike. you would love my friend's seven cycles setup. it's a custom titanium crossbike setup to take 29" wheels. thing weighs 22lbs with full gears, brakes, storage, and a light like a fucking train. thing is retarded sick.

i am really amped on this hub, i want to buy this wheelset for my peugeot.

    Sounds sick, but expensive.

This bike just makes sense to me. It has the simplicity and low maintenance and good looks of a fixie/SS, but with some flexibility gear-wise. The fatter tires and beefy (seemingly- are they actually?) rims will be more comfortable and durable for my fat ass, and I love the color. I can put racks, fenders, knobby/really fat tires, or a fixed wheelset on it if I want. The price seems good for the specs, it's more than I would have thought I would spend on a bike, but I think I can just unload my small fleet of random bikes (which are each wrong for me in a separate way haha) and that'll pay for it. Plus I don't mind assembling it myself, I actually prefer it.

Anyone have testimonies as to the durability/quality of BD's mid-range models like this?
