Sounds like he was being civil, and exercising his right as a citizen as proclaimed within the Constitution. To be tazed, beaten, maimed etc., regardless of orientation in some social, political, or otherwise equally legitimate areas of culture, for expressing your rights is absolutely absurd.
It's not a surprise. But you just hear a quick story about that on the news or wherever (if you are lucky enough) but now that we have a story to hear, and you clearly see damage to the guy and on top of that he is a Pastor (and who beats up pastors, especially a cop) and more and more often is seems like cops do dirty shit so it's a little easier to understand why someone would feel a little more outspoken than hearing your uncle tell you about Rodney King.

Also, like Kevin and Nate said, it's not a surprise. People know this stuff happens and accept it, even though they shouldn't. The fact that this isn't an isolated case makes it more outstanding than if it was. More people need to stand up against this kind of thing the way this man is. I look forward to seeing the results of the court case.
Like Charlie said it is getting worse, there has to be a way to get the rights back under the people fast. The only problem is people do not care unless it has happenend to them. None the less something needs to be done fast so it doesn't get out of control (if it already isn't).
