photog/designers, how much do you expect for a shooting/editting position?

i'm applying for a job at a local studio, basic still object photos and lots of retouching it sounds like. they asked to send previous salary history, since i haven't had a position in this field before i was wondering what would be a good start to ask for?

I got a buddy that is a shoe photogrpaher out here in los angeles and they pay him about 4k a month. He's full time though, if ur freelance you can charge a tad more...
