Default So it's been a few years... time to ask the question. What is WRS doing for blading?

The answer has been real vague, but in reality... what hve they done? Not what some douche wants to write down on apaper and saw they are doing.

Other than the fact they can black ball any competition they want by lowering the star status. What is the point in the WRS?

Do they provide enough cash for world champions to fly over to their competitions?

u nailed it, they made it so its easy to keep the comps the boot companies want big, and the ones they dont want to support small by giving them a lower rating. Thats y each year the big comps never change, and unless u do something like fish is doing, u wont stand a chance of breaking into that exclusive big comp club. They did not bring the comps together at all, each event is run by an amazing person who busts his ass while WRS slaps a logo onto it. oh, and maybe convinces companies to give product to smaller comps.

Who's even involved? I remember how awkward it was after Tom Hyser fired Richie V from RB and they still had to work together. Now Shima and Elliot are in a similar boat (whatever happened there). It's gotta be hard to run an organization in a dead industry when the people in charge don't like each other.

The travel expenses should not be put onto the WRS, that's the responsibility of the sponsors of those that need to travel great distances to compete.

To me, the WRS seems like an attempt to have a polished, central organization in case corporate sponsors want to get in on the action.

Too bad it's joked about within our own community, though. It's 7 1/2 months into the year, and there isn't even a 2011 schedule posted.

Founded by company owners/skating legends Brian Shima, Jon Julio and Kato Mateu and supported by all major skate companies, the World Rolling Series (WRS) is committed to growing the sport.

The WRS links together the best skaters, event organizers, retailers and skate parks, creating a tighter knit community, increasing overall awareness and setting a higher standard for our athletes.

The WRS circuit started in 2009 with 10 established professional contests in France, Netherlands, England, Spain, Australia and the United States. A year later, WRS now includes 100+ Amateurs and Professional events categorized from 1 to 5 stars in 20+ countries.

The World Rolling Series (WRS) has been created to unite the freestyle inline skate community by teaming with established Professional and Amateur events/organizations worldwide, creating a ranking system that will set a defining line between the individual levels of talent within the sport, developing a structured series of professional events, maintaining the integrity of our Blading Culture, and focusing on promotion and increased participation.

The WRS ensures a higher standard and emphasis on the talent and promotion of the sport while increasing the sports size, strength, and recognition everywhere.

I love kids. They're short, highly emotional people who don't know anything. They rely on their creativity and imagination to get by in the world. A world, I might add, filled with giants. Amazing feat.

so its run by a bunch of boot company owners, that never leads to bias towards events at all. This is like letting the owners of the NFL teams set the schedule.

And I have a feeling that Kato pretty much runs the whole thing because he's a fucking boss and sold skates out of his trunk.... commitment.

What happens when no one shows up for work, though?

Nothing gets built at all, and whatever foundation that has been laid starts to decay.

Does skateboarding have a "WRS" type organization?

As far as I know they don't and they're doing just fine without one... Why do we need one? Not saying we need to copy whatever they're doing, just saying we don't need the WRS for outside interest to exist.

WRS was a way for boot companies to control what events they wanted to support instead of letting random events get big on their own, they wanted to control who got big and who didnt so they only had to spend X amount on sending riders places and what to sponsor

Well said. WRS was a way for our industry overlords to keep people like Pam & Richie, CJ, and others from threatening their position and their $$$.

Who would feel threatened by hard-working, passionate & talented people rising to the top in our industry?

skateboarders have the x-games, obviously, and all of the other competitions that lead up to qualifying for it. why would they create something separate when they already run the x games?

I mean, I know who they are, but how do they threaten the "industry overlords"?

sooooooo why doesn't the new york comp just go solo? they laid in all the ground work, and put a ton of effort into making it legit. They know every pro in the world is going to do their best to get that 40 slot invite. Why let WRS piss all over the comp and claim it as their own when they probably did zero work on it?
