Thread: Xsjado setup tips?

  1. #1

    Default Xsjado setup tips?

everyone always says "you can set the flex/support/balance exactly as you want it", but no-one has ever posted any guides as to what changes will result in different feels.

anyone got any handy tips for people wishing to alter the setups of their xsjados?

specifically, im looking for a way to make them naturally lean more outwards, the skate leans too far inwards for my liking as it is right now, and im having real trouble getting used to it

not quite that extreme amount of lean, just a small amount more like razors or valo

try different adjustments with the buckle and straps and you will get different results, find what suits you the best.

I crank my toes, the inside ankle straps are on the 3rd hole to the end, buckle to number 8 and cuff straps are strapped like a death row artist.

I've found that putting the inside instep strap closer to the end (ie, on the first or second hole), so that you can ratchet the buckle more gave that outward lean (and vice versa for inward lean). I have mine on the second or third hole it think, and do the outside buckle to about 8 or 9 clicks with the top straps done as tight as possible. Feels a lot like valo lean, but still has the centered frame feel.

I never could and I tried pretty hard. On three pairs.

this is what i was thinking. put the ankle pads on the opposite skates. it should make the flex change to the other side, which it sounds like you want.

interesting, do you mean swap the entire cuffs around or just swap the padding itself?

you can't swicth the actual cuffs, the holes for the frame bolt receptors wouldn't line up. i meant just the front pads.

Here's a quick rundown of what I do to setup my Birkenblades.

    1. Grind out lip from inside of cuff at top of heel opening. It digs into my heels. Also, with it removed, the footwrap sits a couple mm further "into" the cuff.

    2. Cuff pads up, top straps up. Moving the straps up makes the cuff stiffer, down makes it flexier. The padding is opposite. Remove the extra mounting screws that attach the strap directly to the cuff, and pop out their t-nuts. I mount the carrying loop on the outside of the cuff but with the topstrap over it. I hate having the carrying loop mounted inside the cuff as it adds forward lean (which the skate already has too much of) and it usually makes the loop too small for my sausage fingers.

    3. Put wraps on, put foot in skeleton, kick foot back. Note lengthwise adjustment, adjust cuff size setting if necessary. I wear a 9.5 or 10 in the newer wraps and it's usually the 9-9.5 mark for me.

    4. Put skeleton on, move instep mounting point until tongue is centered over front of ankle when tightened down.

    5. Note instep mount hole. Replace thumbscrew with countersunk screw (a Salomon soulplate screw works well). Remove instep/strap from cuff, use bench grinder to remove lumps on instep intended to help protect the thumbscrew. Remount instep to skate.

    6. Put skate on again. I don't use the toe pad so I see if I need to shorten the toe strap- I usually do. You can just snip the end and sew it up, or get tech and shorten it where it's hidden inside the soulplate (this will leave the logo on the end of the strap intact). I also remove the leather from the underside of the toe strap (where it sits against my foot). This leather makes the strap feel narrower, removing it gives me the full width of the strap tightening against my foot. This is important for me because I'm at the top end of the size range for the small shell and thus the strap is already a bit further forward on my foot/toes than I'd like, and making it narrower obviously doesn't help.

    7. Put skate on, note angle of top straps when viewed from the side. They should not slant upwards to the ringholder, but for many people they do, as the ringholder mounts on the tongue are too high. I also find the padding inside the tongue to be too wimpy, and it seems that Powerslide's factory sometimes does not seat the t-nuts for the ringholder adequately, so they stick way out from the inside face of the tongue plastic. Combine this with them usually using way too long of screws to mount the ringholder, and the tongue is, in my shins' opinions, basically a cinder block with a pillow over it. So...

    8. This is where I get outside of most bladers' abilities: I unstitch the lining fabric from the tongue, remove the stock padding and tnuts, re-mount the ringholder lower on the tongue and with lower-profile t-nuts (USD buckle t-nuts work well, the square silver ones), glue in better foam, and then re-stitch the fabric to the plastic.

sorry to keep asking questions like a dumbass here but, do you mean swap the padding that bolts inside the cuff, or the tounge/buckle/strap assembly thing, or both?

ive seen some people with the tounges swapped so the buckles are inside, not sure if this is just to pretect the buckles from impacts though.

I use a V cut Xsjado cuff, with mid top padding. It gives sorta the same feel, I think you want.

Put your skates on your feet. Build muscles. Know your skates. Have fun...

I ride Xsjados and I like them because of the comfort and support they bring...nothing more (and because they look like fucked up weird skates from another dimension....).

    Go ride, stay evil, goodnight....

have large shell................inside strap is bolted in the second whole away from the sole plates and set on the fourth whole on upper setting.................mid buckle bolted on first whole closest to sole plate. toe strap reversed so that it straps inward (so velcro does not detach ) cuff cushion set on upper setting so it sits lower........tried almost everything this worked for me
