    Default Good Rock Music

Could someone please turn me on to some good modern rock music or any era for that matter...? I am giving Hip Hop a rest for a while. After working for a blog that I had to post nothing but the most mainstream God awful Hip Hop around I have been turned off the genre completely for now and am looking to get turned on to other music I have missed out on.

Lately I have picked up the White Stripes again and still like them a lot so anything similar I'm sure I'd like, but anything that's cool please throw out there.

Go to the roots, that's my philosophy. Starting with the old blues guys is a great way to do it. But if you're not someone who appreciates the technical-historical aspect of the music you might want to fast forward to classic rock, where the white guys steal the blues guys music and pop it up: Led Zeppelin! They define rock, as far as I'm concerned (and not so much heavy metal, anymore.)

    Catchy:

    Groovy:

Nice, I like that. Forgot to mention that I'm looking for some blues rock as well but I suppose mentioning the white stripes kind of covered that. Now to listen to the rest of what's in the thread

Some of my favorite classic rock albums:
Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach; At Fillmore East
Jethro Tull - Stand Up; Benefit
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow; Crown of Creation
Led Zeppelin - especially I, II, and III
13th Floor Elevators - Psychedelic Sounds; Easter Everywhere
    Santana - their first 4 albums (1969-72)
Black Sabbath - their first 4 albums (1970-72)
    Pink Floyd - Meddle
King Crimson - In The Court Of (first album)
The Who - Live At Leeds; Sell Out
Cream - Disraeli Gears; Wheels Of Fire
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced; Electric Ladyland
    Velvet Underground and Nico
Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet; Let It Bleed; Exile On Main St.
There is just so much more, but I consider all of these essential listening in the rock vein.

god yes. king crimson is one of my favorite bands. in the court of the crimson king is an easy listen compared to their other stuff, but if you can dig it, listen to "islands" and "red" a few times. seriously some of the best music ever made. islands will give you a good feel of the sinfield/collins era stuff, and red will give you a good feel for the wetton/bruford era stuff.

john wetton has the best voice for king crimson without a doubt. on top of those fantastic basslines, jesus. i'm going to listen to my KC records all day now.

If you have itunes subscribe to the KEXP song of the day and live session podcasts. You get a lot of free music so it's easier to decide what you like.

    mewithoutYou is my favorite band:

Lately I've been in to Active Child (which you admittedly, probably won't like)

    Nick Lowe

Louis XIV and The Rapture are good in a completely different way too.

Any and all Rolling Stones albums
Radiohead (I like all of their stuff, but Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer are probably best for someone who isn't much into rock)
    The Antlers
    Black Sabbath
    Warren Zevon
    King Crimson
    Yes
    Primus
    Incubus
    The Notwist
    Broken Social Scene
    Modest Mouse
    Editors
    Queens of the Stone Age
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Thee More Shallows
    The Velvet Underground
    Joy Division
    The Smiths
    The Doors
    Built to Spill
    Bauhaus
    Blonde Redhead
    The Beatles

I'm just going by the rock I have on my iPod. I never realized how much rap/hip-hop I listen to.
