Really need microphone help!

So I have a new laptop I bought to skype w/ my buddy in afganistan. However, if i try to use the webcam/microphone the speakers wont adjust lower than the mic and it causes feedback. I can lower the mic level below the speaker but not the speakers lower than the mic. If I try it automatically lowers the mic with it. Anyone have experience with this? What can I do?

you're probably not using a MAC but this might help

systems preferences >sound>input>

then adjust from there.
