Thread: Little help for a new guy?

Default Little help for a new guy?

So basically I'm at UNI at the minute, and my course school is being nice to me and giving me some money just for doing my course and I intend to invest some in a new set of skates. Ive been skating since I was about 5, though its all been for hockey, so I'm trying to get into something new.

I have been looking at a few set of skates and was just looking for opinions and alot of help with frames and wheels and the like.
I've been looking at both the JC Rowe and the Stockwell Xsajdos as well as Haffey 2.1 Remz.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated guys

If you like your hockey skates(assuming they are carbonfiber or fiberglass of some sort with the whole one piece boot design) you may like Carbon 2s, 3, or Frees.

Would they feel much like hockey skates? Because I find my skates pretty stiff, and I think I'd prefer something softer for this kind of skating. But the Frees are a nice looking pair of skates

The remz haffey's are allot like a hockey skate, to the point of having hockey style laces and lacing.

Their a little low cut though.

Since your just getting into the "aggressive" style i say go with either Razor cults(or SSM or Nimhs) or Roces m12's. I always suggest the cults because they are good for anybody getting into the sport and easy to learn on and they want burn your wallet if u decide to quit

Hey guys, thanks for all the help, but from the suggestions I think I'm liking Justins suggestion of the carbon frees, but I'm still a bit lost with frames and wheels. Being from the UK I was looking at Loco's website and I found this
    HTML Code:
    http://www.locoskates.com/product_info.php?products_id=1165
and was wondering if this was good or if I should get the frames and wheels separate?

Agreed ..can't beat cults on price and performance plus they have prity good boot sizes so you don't end up with boats

Remz are absolutely nothing like hockey skates.

Hey guys thanks for the help, think I'm going to either go with Carbon frees or xsjados. The price doesnt really matter much, cause either way I'll be using them to get to and from Uni and speed up a 40minute walk. So they will get used even if i decide the sport isn't for me.

I'm still lost when it comes to frames and wheels though, I'm not really sure what the differences are...

if youre getting skates to commute with and coming from a hockey background, i'd go for the carbon frees with a nice flat setup. That's 8 full sized wheels all touching, rides faster and longer than an anti setup (4 full size wheels on the outside, and 4 smaller grinding wheels in the middle)

for frames go for something like 50/50 cores, create originals, or even valo frames if you want to save some money. all these are great for riding flat.

i'm pretty sure 58mm wheels will fit flat on any of the frames i mentioned, you want bigger wheels to last longer and cruise easier. i'd try to get 58mm Eulogy's, Undercovers, or Street Artists (undercover and street artist are the same essentially), i'd invest in the undercovers as people on here rave about how little they wear, and seeing as wheels are usually the first thing to replace it's much easier to get really good wheels to start with.

for bearings i'd go for Crap bearings or Bones Reds
or i bought these a while ago and it was the best bearing investment i ever made, 5 sets of generic china reds for the price of one nice set of skate bearings http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHINA-REDS-A...item415c6ac9a4

also, i would be hesitant to try xsjados as your first blades. they're a niche skate and only a select crowd really enjoys them, they're designed very well though and have tons of advantages, but it's definitely something you need to try out before you buy.

Yea I think I'll end up getting Carbons. When I was first looking into frames and stuff I thought about going flat, but I've read that they need a lot more accuracy to stick grinds and stuff, and wasnt sure if that would be good for starting out?

i think alot of us on here will have started out skatin on flat setups as 14 years ago it was all that was bout a anti rocker setup or freestyle set up wull just mean you wont go as fast or far with out effort also wheels wear out quicker but the choice is yours ..if you rele want to try get into it then maby a anti rocker setup is i good way to go . myself i like freestyle but iv skated on and off for 14 yers and you fined what you like by that time..not to mention the price you can get frames of ebay you wud get both setups

Yea freestyle frames would be the best way to go starting out, antis will get you broke off until u get use to them or atleast they did for me,took me some getting use to but now i prefer freestyle, but M1s or eulogys would be my wheels of choice and for bearings unless u can afford the $$ for swiss bearings just bones reds will do, or you could give the king crow precessions a go i got a set and love them they are fast and smooth

Am I the only one who saw him say he wanted these to get to class? Sounds like xsjado with kaltiks would be the way to go. Big wheels for speed, step in and out with the footwraps, seems easy to me.

Thats why I was thinking xsjados, but then people said they take a lot of getting use to. And im sure it's not that much more trouble to pack a pair of shoes in my bag and just throw them on?

I love my xsjados. The huge souls take some getting used too, but they flex well and still have plenty of support. I love my farmer footwraps, they are hella comfy but the souls are hella thin. I want jc Rowe footwraps the grey or but they arnt available seperatley yet.

    I'm going to recommend:
Razors (any, but try them on)
    K2 Varsities

BUT... I would try to find a store that sells some skates and try them on. You really can't make an educated decision without knowing how the skates feel first. You're not going to go wrong with any major brand for your first skate because after you skate them for a while you'll learn what aspects of a skate you like and dislike. Your second and third pairs of skates (in one or two years, hopefully!) will work a lot better for you because A. you'll have two years experience, and B. You'll understand the nuances of skate technology and get a skate that works right for you.

One thing that is important, however, is that no matter what skate you get, make sure you get one that fits! Generally the rule is get the smallest size you can without having chronic foot pain (so, that's comfortable.) A lot of skaters will get skates that are even a bit too small so that when they 'open up', or get worn in, they will be the perfect size.
Remember: "It is better to keep your [hands still] and appear stupid than to [respond] and remove all doubt."

I really don't think xsjado are a bad idea for a first aggressive skate (you already know how to roll..), people here seriously exaggerate the difference in feel (I have 5 dif pairs of skates, 1 being xsjado). They are far superior when it comes to commuting and just quickly popping the skates on and off (especially for the store). Plus the foot wraps may grow on you for daily use, I now rotate between two types of farmer wraps and my jugs. They're also hella customizable.
