The upside down cross symbolized how St. Peter was crucified. Then it was adopted as a symbol of Satanism. Satanism is a common theme in heavy metal and black metal especially because some of them dislike christianity and/or have satanic themes in their music. They didn't "change" the meaning of the upside down cross, they just incorporated it into part of the metal image. It's really easy to google these things and find out what the real answer is, but who would expect you to do that?
