why the hell is it so hard to get a job when you actualy have qualifications a trade a decade of experience

if i here the phrase not enought experince in particular role or over qualified i may just scream

what is it with this country UK when actualy trying to better yourself works against you

    tell me about it

not quite the same problem here, but same results. 4 A-levels, a BSc and an MSc and much more work experience with big companies than most people my age, and when i go to interviews i get told i don't "have enough real-world experience", but if i go down one level of jobs I'm "over-qualified", and they wont take me because they expect me to bugger off after a few months onto a higher job. pissing me off.

all i can do now really is pester people for short paid placements or working for free, simply to boost my CV.

...(all depends on the choice of occupation (i cook...(/OVER qualified for most.) so the tattoo's on my arms(including forearms/wrists/ hands/knuckles, and neck don't effect me getting hired(not in the public eye.)

now i do admit forehead tattoos(such as my dog CH...) ppl start to overthink LOL.

Working on your spelling and grammar might help to improve your cover letters.

It's a horrible time to be looking for a job and it really is as danjama said, finding someone willing to take a chance on you. When I came back to New York from overseas a couple years ago it took me nearly a year to find something full time in my field. I did the temp thing to get by, had literally 50 phone interviews, was offered a job where they'd actually pay for my moving expenses and told the next day offered it to someone else (WTF??) was actually flown from NY to Palm Beach, FL for a 3rd interview for one company and still didn't get the job. It was frustrating and I felt like giving up.

But then one day I got a call from a recruiter in NJ, had 2 phone interviews with them and then a short interview with the woman at the company I work for now. I was hired on as a programmer, for half the pay I got in NYC for a 3 month project in upstate NY and had to drive 1 1/2 hours to work. I worked as hard as I could for those 3 months and after the contract was up I was hired on directly as a contractor and was able to negotiate my pay. That was about 8 months ago and now there is finally talk about being hired on fulltime with benefits starting July.

I guess my point is keep at it. I know it's frustrating as hell when you know you are qualified but can't find a job but eventually someone will give you a shot even if it's not exactly your dream job and pay isn't what you want. Once you get your foot in the door you can always work your way up or apply for a better job elsewhere.

Times are rough. Employers can treat you like shit and get away with it because they know there are ten guys lined up to take your place.

Myself and a lot of my friends work "less dignified" jobs part to full time while pursuing what we really want to do in our spare time. I feel like this is the trait of our generation.

    What a depressing ass thread.

I'm really lucky, I work in 2 creative fields and I'm able to pay the bills and put food on the table for my family. I work smart, not hard. Sure, there are long hours, but it's not physically or mentally demanding like the grunt work I've done in the past (hospitality, customer service, food industry, bullshit, etc.).

To those that can, look for work at non-profit companies. They tend to treat their employees well & have good benefits.

It's nice to not have to pay for my own business cards, is what I'm saying

I love kids. They're short, highly emotional people who don't know anything. They rely on their creativity and imagination to get by in the world. A world, I might add, filled with giants. Amazing feat.

I'm getting under paid by 5-10k a year right now, but I was out of a job for. 3 months and took it. I'm still taking interviews now, at least I can use what I'm doing here at another job, and when ur employed jobs call u back more often, it's fucked up but it's true. When I had no job I hardly got called, now that my resume says I'm working they call all the time.

I had a professional job in an unrelated field within a month of getting a B.A.

My parents knew someone, although I was qualified, I still feel kind of shitty about it. I can't imagine how discouraging the post-grad job search must be right now.

Ya, but it will effect you getting the position as head chef of major reasturuant. But ya, you won't have trouble finding prep cook work...or maybe even a sue chef, so you can intimidate the prep staff.
