Thread: PRO CONTENT; ON-LINE & DVD...

    Default PRO CONTENT; ON-LINE & DVD...

    -Within the entire industry, how much pro content is released per month?
    -How many DVD parts does a Pro average per year?
    -Do you think a balance of both can be achieved, and does anyone do this?
    -Do you think Pros are completely slacking, and/or do you think companies are slacking on compensation of content?
    -Compared to the amount of views on-line content achieves, is spending a year on the "epic" section a waste of time for the purpose of marketing?
    -Is making a DVD even profitable? for everyone invloved (i.e producer, filmer, director, skaters)
    -Is just attending contests (competing or not), supporting the local scene, and touring fulfulling ones duties as a Pro.

    Personally, I think majority of Pros are slacking ass on getting content/product placement out there and being seen in the public eye, and next to no one is creating innovative On-line content. Discuss

    Dat's a lot to discuss.


    I remember appreciating a conversation involving Shawn and Charles about only using the best footage and making short videos to keep people wanting more. I think this should apply to pros. Take your time, make something sick, keep people hungry for it. Online is oversaturated - leave it to the ams.

    On the other hand, Brandon Smith's online skate release was awesome.

    Dvd's are dead.

    I haven't bought a new video in about 5 years.

    There are a handful of pro's that do a great job coming out with quality content and doing it quickly.. but just a handful.

    Flow riders do a majority of the proper promotion nowadays.

    So should Pros release this "epic" content On-line or DVD. What do they do with the leftovers? I agree on-line is oversaturated with sub-par to par skating, but can on-line content be saturated with above par content? (can you have too much good-great skating?)

    Would a monthly installment from a Pro be unwelcome?

    Why has no one thought outside of the box of the "standard" edit. For example, a blading TV (er on-line) show with consistent theme. Suprisingly enough ONE seems to be the only outlet (w/ consistency) producing something like this with the Sunday Sessions.

    Not sure if this is true across the board b/c I happen to know for fact that one of the boot companies pays for up to 4 edits/month/edit. However, I don't necesarrily think this particular company has anymore Pro content than the next. Maybe a little bit more.

    I prefer DVD but realize it's not too profitable. I love what AJ is doing with Vibralux and his tours, but that lifestyle isn't sustainable, and I don't expect him to keep it up for much longer.

    I really like what RB has been doing with Lonnie and their incredible team to make top notch online content. USD has been hit or miss and some good things have come through Richie and Dustin, but anything they do with Matty Watky makes me cringe. So glad they seem to have moved on from dubstep and all those awful am edits like that am tour where Brett was the only cool person involved. Razors almost never does it right online and should just stay away from the internet. Valo covers DVD and online content pretty well. They mix it up a lot.

    i haven't read all the responses so i can't say that my thoughts haven't been already said. with that:

    there is a lot of room for innovation within the skating market and its use of online tools available. i thought valo was going to break through with their release on itunes. i don't understand why more companies haven't done this yet. make videos available as a download. just about everyone has access to the appstore and yet no one is using it. i know for me its much easier to download a video rather than either find a local shop that carries it or going through the process of ordering it online and dealing with shipping. even something like making the video available for 9.99 and then individual sections for 0.99. if people only want to see the newest alex section, then they can just purchase that. if they want the whole video, then get the whole video. cut down on packaging and duplication costs immensly. i'm not sure how much apple takes per transaction but i can't imagine it to bee so much that its prohibitive. i know people still bought shred til your dead even though it was free online. the avengers showed that although the film was highly pirated, people still shelled out crazy money to see it in theatres. this at least give a preview option available for those not sure that they want a physical copy.

    as for online content released by the industry, razors had something cool going on with their games of skate in being innovative and interesting to watch. usd's barcelona project was also great and valo did a good job with their b. smith release and what they were doing before with their clips of the week. i understand that filming for videos takes a lot of time and energy but i don't think that every clip they film is large-release worthy and don't see why a monthly 1 to 2 minute edit with quality clips from their riders isn't possible.

    i notice that a lot of excuses for videos lacking a section from so and so is that they were too busy filming for another video. what i don't understand then is why companies don't just combine their resources into one video. it seems as if most pros tend to share sponsors anyways. what i mean by this is that lots of razors riders are on ground control anyways. can't they put out a joint video? with a frame, wheel, and skate company behind a video, i'd imagine they could accomplish a lot more. also, the tour videos that aj does are great in showing spot diversity and whatnot but i just don't think that a skater on tour is gonna put out as much content as someone taking their time with their section. skating wears down the body and i can imagine that skating for hammers day in and day out along with uncomfortable van rides and the inevitable partying on tour takes a lot away from their performance.

    as for the contest attendance, personally, if i were a team manager/company owner and was paying to fly out my team to contests, i'd pay their expenses based on performance. this isn't to say that i wouldn't pay if they didn't win. but just showing up and dicking around would not be acceptable for me. look at how much shit lebron gets for his 4th quarter performance (fuck him btw. i hope they lose tonight) imagine if he showed up to games and just warmed up he would never get a contract again.

    anyways, gotta go but that's my 2 cents.

    hate to go back to skateboarding, but we need a site like the Berrics. Categories for certain things, and then online features have longevity as a posed to being on rollernews for 2 days and stuck between joe smiths 2012 spring edit. Go on the site and watch some stuff to see what i'm talking about.

    The pros do games of skate, interviews, demo edits, first try fridays, park edits, etc. to keep people entertained. But at the same time, advertisements are at the beginning of each video to promote a new shoe or new full pro section coming soon.

    dvds are dead because stunts are dead in my experience anything that doesn't have a full bolino, broskow, haffey, montre, farmer, chase... etc (big names) in it isn't worth 20 bucks and this is why we see videos like "take your time" being released on line.
    it's compounded by the fact that filming editing and producing dvds is easier than ever before.

    and dvds are further pushed under the radar by poor choices like putting shitting vomiting, showing gaps that aren't landed in the trailer like they were landed

    the good pros drop at least two sections a year which is decent when your doing big ass stunts, people that don't do stunts seem to drop edits of shit we've all seen a million times way more often, and this is why there is such a huge gap in rollerblading.
    AMs that do a bunch of tech shit 90% of the time don't go anywhere near gaps bigger than 10 stairs, tech is fun to watch, but stunts are what get you juiced to try some crazy shit

    if you want someone to actually pay money for a dvd it has to have a really high level of skating in it. i'm not going to pay twenty dollars unless there's a 20 set being gapped

See, that's exactly what I do like. The tech scenes making videos right now strike me as depressing, unenthusiastic, and lackadaisical. That's a good attitude for a high school grunge band, but I don't like it in skate videos. If more tech videos featured skating on boxes on roofs in the Caribbean I'd be more into it.

    Lastly, as far as videos go I've never seen a hammer that didn't belong in a skate video, but I've seen a fair share of "tech" blading clips that should have never made the cut, regardless of taste.

    I said it was overdone meaning it has it's place, but little kids jocking the shit out of (whoever) are cheering excessively for clips that don't deserve it because they see people cheering for each other in videos and they want to do stuff they see in videos.


    As for hammers not belonging in a skate video, what if the dude lands in the lava and looks like an idiot dragging a foot doing a 360 or 540 of sketching around after the landing and picks up change wearing a shirt wrapped around his head with ugly razors with 5 colors on his skates then pumps his fists and talks into the camera missing teeth and generally doing everything he can to look like an ass-clown? That shit doesn't belong in a video hammer or not.

    you're right ian. that doesn't belong in a video. a hammer isn't a hammer just because its a big trick. it is a hammer because it is a big trick done well. best example is that 540 back royale in barcelona someone did. yea its a huge trick. but i looks like shit so who gives a fuck. if that is done with style and landed clean then put it in a video. i don't know where this idea came from that hammers are just big tricks and who cares what they look like and tech is just little shit done with style. a good section has big, tech tricks. look at the vx section from whatever kfc video that was in. that is what every section should strive to be. big tricks done with good style by top pros. too much garbage gets put out and gets props even though its garbage. i see it every day on this board. people need to go watch old joe navran and beau cottington videos to remember how skating should be seen. In my opinion, all the honey baked edits and other crews like them that everyone blows their load over are what an amateur section is. ok tricks done with ok style that deseve ok props. yet people on here go nuts over them. keep that shit online and focus on making a good video. people like aj are smart though. they see all of you guys jocking that garbage and thus they put it in their videos. in return, we get watered down videos with clips from kids that just take up the space that real clips should be in.
