Thread: Airing spines and fly boxes

Default Airing spines and fly boxes

Alright so I just recently started skating vert quite a bit, starting to learn the ropes.

I have a 4 to 3 ft spine, and a 4ft fly box at are park.

When I go air the spine, I seem like I lean too far foward and almost lose my balance, and or I almost land to flat, even when I try to go straight up.

When I go to air the fly box, I go at a decent pace bend my knees and push as I go up the ramp, but I dont seem to get much air probably like 3 feet.

And when I try going really fast, I just end up losing my balance in the air and eating it, or just look sloppy like I'm about to fall.

Any tips on airing spines and boxes?

Maybe I'm just trying to get big air too fast, maybe need more practice.

For spines, turn sideways in the air then back to land. This way you don't have to just lean forward, you feel more like you're going around the spine than over. Going straight over a spine is weird.

For the boxes, you sound like you just need to get comfortable going fast and having control of your skating. That'll come with time

Practice, practice, practice. Sounds like you're trying to do the ramps job. Just go with it, try not to force the air. As far as only getting 3 feet of air it just sounds like you're not going fast enough or the ramp angle isn't right. It's all about momentum. If you don't weight all that much it's really hard to keep momentum through the jump. Also you need to fully commit, if you don't that's when shit starts going down hill for you and you're going to get hurt. If you're getting squirrely in the air, try working on your balance on a large trampoline.

you gotta use your knees and legs to push yourself up and over that shit
don't lean forward until you can see the other quarter below you

On the spine you can carve your air (float sideways a bit)....your goal for landing is under the coping......I have a bad habit of clipping the coping.

The jump box....if you cannot pump enough or jump enough you need to hit that thing fast.
Practice on a quarterpipe and land on the platform ontop.....Then do the same on the jump box with the same speed and newly accomplished confidence.

I'm gonna go a head and put another nail in da coffee.

You probably noticed that your body naturally wants to turn slightly when you go over a spine. Let your legs turn, but keep above your waist fairly straight, this is also some times refered to as a "shifty."
You don't need much air to make the spine, so bring your legs back parallel with your body once you see the other side and bend your knees to absorb the transition on the other side and pump on through.
This all happens a lot faster then I am able to describe it, so invision yourself doing so before attempting, or maybe even try it on the ground before hand.

Have you learned any grabs? Learning how to comfortably grab your skate instead of just "tapping" or "slapping" your boot, can help you learn how to "hold" your airs.
What I mean by that is you will be able to keep your legs up and knees bent for longer, thus helping you to clear that box with out going "too" fast.

Although hail'n bails usually makes it easier, but that will come with experience.
