Thread: Madbeef (handplant rail grinds, step-up frontsides, and falls)

Default Madbeef (handplant rail grinds, step-up frontsides, and falls)

Found my Madbeef VHS in storage a few weeks ago and watched it today. I totally forgot how awesome and terrible blading was back in the early 90s! Seeing all the handplant rail grinds and step-up frontsides made me remember how guilty I am of doing this, hahahah. Are these offenses a natural instinct for all bladers? Like, if a rail is too high but just too good to pass up, I'll do a little hop up (kinda like jumping a hurdle...lift the soul foot up a few inches and then spring off of my other foot) but I never actually step up. So, since there are all these rules in rolling now, does skating (such as the kind in Madbeef) not count? And does it not count if both feet don't leave the ground at the same exact time?

Falls...why don't videos really have fall sections anymore? Fester has one but I haven't really seen many others. Are rollerbladers too vain to display their awkward moments? Some of the worst falls I've seen were in old VHS movies.

    I hate bails sections personally.

I hate them because they are scary, haha. Worst one I've seen that really stuck with me was...well, I don't remember the video. The blader was wearing 5th Elements and he was doing a fish or topside on a downrail against a wall and his soul foot got stuck between the rail and the wall and he came down but his foot just stayed there all twisted. Worst!

Worst one I've ever seen was either The Hoax or Hoax 2. There's a clip after the end credits with a guy going down a rail in Australia. He falls and his foot ends up backwards and he rolls on the ground while flapping around like a fish out of water. Still makes me nauseous everytime I think about it.

Old skating 'counts' because it was the best there was at the time (and that skates would allow you to do!) If you did that now you'd be way behind the times (obviously) because it's considered easy compared to what else you can do on skates. Someone who doesn't know about skating culture would get just as juiced on a step up frontside today. 'Counts' is just a way of saying something is accepted as good skating. I assume if someone stepped up to the 666 rail and did the whole thing we'd have to admit it was still pretty bad ass, although not as good as Rob G's!

Rob G did it too but did it not count because he rolled away and then fell in the dirt?

And as for Hoax 1 or 2, that was the movie I was talking about, I think. I don't remember who he was but the damn image scarred me for life!

That's how shit was done back then and then bladers learned...they evolved.

#1 reason why there are no fall sections because i've noticed as of the past couple years in blading when people fall they get really really sad and look really depressed and it just looks so emo and weak no one wants to watch that (one of the brierlys in sleaze video best example) he falls and just sits there looking like he wants to cut his wrists open
#2 reason people put falls in the middle of their sections which is a dumb idea. a fall in the middle of a section breaks up the flow i want to see tricks in a section not falls lump them all in the beginning or end but not in the middle it's like oh look at my cool fall and ooh now i landed it i have perseverance hahahahaha
falling shouldn't be such a bummer thing we do risky shit and we are going to eat shit sometimes because of a tiny rock and others because you weren't ready for something instead of looking like the lead singer of a scremo band smile and let everyone know that you're not hurt as bad as you are making it look

i think it is important to have a fall section because it helps the viewer learn what to do in a similar situation. Plus you get to see the battle someone went through to get their trick done. If you have a weak stomach and can't handle watching falls, then you are quite frankly a pussy.

I like watching falls before a trick is landed because you get to see what effort was put into it.

i for one fucking love bail sections... its a reality of skating and i find it hilarious, even when the injuries are severe i'm laughing.
i usually laugh at my friends when they get hurt, and as soon as i can breathe again ill have a laugh at my own stupid ass after a fall... grown men skating around in the streets on wheeled boots, whats not to laugh at?

So how about my question "if both feet don't leave the ground at the same tine, does it not count?". I'm not talking about step ups either.

wasn't there a video that had a clip of someone getting a really long splinter in their foot? can't remember alot of details. seems all my years of binge drinking is starting to catch up to me.
