    Default Fighting?

I decided to give Mauy Thai a try a couple months ago. My shitty temper got me in some hot water twice in a week and this MMA dude I work with told me to give fighting in the ring a go, that it would help. I have lost a shit ton of weight (from 205 to 174) and feel pretty fantastic. My coach wants me to get down to 170 and fight in a tournament in October. Anyone else box, mma, kickbox, whatever? Does it help with skating(i haven't been skating lately so I have no comparison)? I have been training for this race in November and if I want to fight in October I would have to give up training for the race so I guess I'm looking for some perspective? I don't know.

An activity like Muay Thai would seriously help with skating. All the stretching and leg strengthening would allow you to get much lower on grinds, as you'd have the strength to hold yourself up, and you'd be able to jump higher, as well as have better balance.

I've tried kickbox and honestly - it was great. The only problem was that I didn't have the money to 3 times a week and this is not something you can learn easily. Try it, i'm sure that u will love it and as far as i know, Muay Thai is even more fun.

Given your past and your confessed anger issues I would worry about you becoming an even more effective puncher. You could get to the point where one flare up ends with you accidentally killing someone. Go with yoga or tai chi to learn control above all else.

Wushu is pretty badass. I'd like to see some of that in MMA

Martial arts are fun, the whole activity is actually really interesting and it doesn't mean that you will become an aggressive fighting machine. Considering your past this may be 1)a really good idea 2)the worst idea ever....Tournaments are bullshit tho, knockouts are not healthy at all.

i also have a horrible temper, and i have often thought that getting into some type of martial arts would help level me out. but i dont have any money to enroll, nor the strength to be competitive

I prefer giving Indian burns to small children when I want to relieve some anger.

my father is retired green berret and made it his point to have me take various martial arts since i was young. I took tai kwan do (complete waste of time), Judo, Hapkido, muay thai, jui jitzu, and krav maga. years of skating will actually either help or hurt you in muay thai. the bones in my shins are really calcified over from years of falling on them and are pretty numb same with the knees. that coupled with my light weight class and long arms/legs gave me a huge advantage. it is super expensive and i do not recomend tournaments. I got TKO'd by a 5' tall spanish kid that was super quick with a boxing background. took me 8 months of training after that to return the favor to him. gives great core strengthening with makes spinning/control while skating much easier but will only make you more of a trained killer if you already have anger issues (my father is proof of that). Krav maga is by far the hardest one i have do so far. the endurance training involved is rediculous.
