Default Poor Folk Grocery Shopping Challenge

    taken from http://be-mag.com/msgboard/viewtopic...=asc&start=260

1 gallon of milk (with the price divided in half since my roommate and i both use it): $1.45
18 extra large publix eggs: $1.95
1 bag of publix shredded cheese: $2.59
a 1/4 watermelon (a whole one would have been a better option for about the same price but we don't have room for it): $2.74
    1 can tomato paste: $1.39
    1 can tomato sauce: $.99
1 box of whole grain spaghetti: $1.43
    5 pornstar sized bananas (2.61lbs): $1.31
1.34lbs of sliced canteloupe (again, a whole one would be a better option for about the same price but no room): $1.36
about a pound of ground chuck beef: $3.91
3 large boneless chicken breasts: $8.49

comes to $27.61 and has to last through wednesday. only thing not included is a small box of cheerios i bought while on vacation but since the bag of cheese only adds flavor and no real nutritional value i think it's ok to substitute them since they cost about the same.

not quite the $21 greg wants but it's pretty close considering i've never done budget grocery shopping before. i think i could do better but we'll see how this week goes first.

    FUCK YES THIS THREAD RULES

i too am a budget grocery shopper

my list is pretty similar to yours.

other things on my list tend to be

    Big bags of rice
    EPIC sized cans of pineapple
    Large cans of beans
    oatmeal

as far as vegetables, i'm really lucky to have my family's 1.5 acre garden + massive orchard to tap into whenever i want. i need to get another fridge/freezer for my basement so i can have more space to store stuff during the winter months. My fridge is pretty big but i'd feel like a dickhead if my room mates came home to find a 5 gallon bucket of apples/squash taking up all the space that they could put their food

Cheese does have nutritional value. Just FYI.

well yeah technically it does but when you sprinkle it on pasta it makes such a small different that it's not even worth counting.

damn i should have gotten rice. oh well i'll do it next week.

our fridge is pretty much one giant freezer because it doesn't work right so we have to put everything in my roommate's mini fridge.

man, i wish i could do this still but living with my girlfriend it's not always an option. mine would generally consist of about 8 boxes of store brand mac and cheese at 25 cents each. coffee, milk, dozen eggs, loaf of bread, sliced cheese, spaghetti, sauce, and beer.

i can't itemize because i spend about $135 a week on groceries, mostly at Trader Joe's. i eat pretty good

I love kids. They're short, highly emotional people who don't know anything. They rely on their creativity and imagination to get by in the world. A world, I might add, filled with giants. Amazing feat.

damn i always consider it an expensive trip when my girlfriend and i will split a 100-150 dollar grocery bill at trader joes every 2-3 weeks. when we do that we only end up spending an extra 30-40 dollars a week supplementing it usually, which is pretty cheap for us.

We have this grocery store called Aldies, You can get mad cheap food, Not high grade of course, Carton of eggs for 80 cents. (I buy several) 2 blocks of chedder cheese for 3 bucks, Then I buy a lot of bacon and steak. Green beans and 2 loafs of bread and one carton of butter and milk. Then a few odds and ends. (mostly just ramen.)

usually adds up to around 20.

Which is awesome because thats about as much as I can spend for food on my budget.

    [edit]

I suck at cooking, My neighbor a floor down brings defective bottled beer back every weekend, so thats where my beer supply comes from.

Aldi is dope for cheap food, although their canned goods are actually more expensive than the store brand at the regular supermarkets here.

i hate the gas i get from aldi products. but i did so love shopping there. i used to live behind one, so i would just take the cart home.

good spot for milk, eggs, hamburger, and large bags of frozen products. oh and don't forget the cheap ass arizona tall boy cans.
