    Default Computer people....

Some kind of a fan died on my PC at home. It smelled like burning plastic and then switched off on its own. It wont turn back on now.

    How do I fix?

buy a new fan, sounds like your processor fan is broken.

Find out the type of CPU you have, go on newegg, buy a new one. Fan for the processor that is, not CPU - each CPU req. it's own type of fan.

Your PC will shut down itself if it knows the fan is broken, to avoid overheating.

You have any idea how hot a CPU gets in under 5 seconds? It becomes too hot to touch, you can literally fry an egg on it after 10 seconds of it being on, that being said, if you have been forcing it to run and what not without a working heatsink/fan, then you probably already burned out your CPU and fucked up your computer, in that case replacing said fan wont do shit. Also the smell of burning plastic, etc. is not a good sign, and probably one of which you've already burned it out.

So after you realized that the fan stopped working, how long did you force your computer to stay on? Any longer than 10-15 minutes I can pretty much guarantee you that you burnt out your CPU/MoBo.

It only stayed on for like 5 minutes. I wasn't using it at the time. I booted it up and started getting ready for work. Smelled something funny when I got back in my room and when I was checking it out it just switched off.

    that wasn't Al!

I love kids. They're short, highly emotional people who don't know anything. They rely on their creativity and imagination to get by in the world. A world, I might add, filled with giants. Amazing feat.
