I have rddien to and from work for 30 years or so and agree with the legal requirement for helmets. Unlike Doc Martin, I have come off twice – once at night when a large black dog appeared on the road in front of me and again when a stick thrown up by a grass mower stuck in my front wheel. While I did not hit my head on either occasion, the potential was there.I have also, on the Cor Drive ‘bikepath’ (as it was then), seen pedestrians and a child (about 4 yrs) on a bicycle suddenly change direction into the path of cyclists – with terrible consequences.I have always seen the use of helmets for the bike-hire scheme as an obvious problem and presumed that this had been well considered – obviously not!Dispensable linings seem an obvious solution- but maybe all this has been considered?
