Ignition City Guide Berlin by Dirk Oelmann

After I graduated in Fashion and Graphic Design in Trier, Germany I moved to Berlin. One of the first things I did was to go to Ignition skateshop to get in touch with local skaters. During the first few months of my time there I chatted a lot about rollerblading and its significance in the local skate scene with Leo, the owner of Ignition. I quickly realized that it was difficult to find good skate spots as the city is just too damn big! After some discussions Leo asked me to do an “Ignition City Guide” for Berlin. We sat down and brainstormed some ideas about the concept and content.

The main idea for the city guide is to combine different media like Internet, video and print to give the customers an idea of the best skating, best skate spots, lifestyle and other information about Berlin all combined into one project. The city guide is also a document about the current level of rollerblading and its main characters in Berlin.

I spent the whole spring, summer and autumn looking for interesting content, taking photos of the city, skating, working on a layout, collecting information and preparing text, all while working on my design major.

Looking back it was a great job to do. Working with Leo and all the other guys like Sascha, Piesik, Mathias and Tim who have been down with rollerblading for the longest time was really refreshing. I got to know everyone in the rollerblading scene of Berlin really well during this time and am proud to call these guys’ friends and family now.

I had the best opportunity to showcase skating in Berlin from my point of view and in a way so that other people from outside of the sport can get a glimpse on how cool rollerblading is!
