Adapt Brand was founded in 2012 by Pieter Wijnant and Olga Bouwhuis and was officially launched at last year's Winterclash. The Dutch based company is still going strong and they are releasing new and improved models for 2013. Be-mag took some time to speak with the pair at their office in Den Haag to discuss the growing pains of a new blade company, product innovations as well as the collaboration with Be-mag on our limited edition 15th anniversary boot.
I had seen touristbladers before of course. Most of the time you would run into touristbladers at the local skatespots, and every once in a while you could spot a small flock of touristbladers in the wild. But nothing could have prepared me for the amount of touristbladers I witnessed the days leading up to one of the most anticipated real street events ever. Everywhere I went I encountered Mindgame hoodies, $enate backpacks, Medium sweaters and more of the like. Us Damsko Kids had been waiting for this weekend ever since it had become clear that the two grandfathers of real street contests would be working together on what was to become one of the most epic rollerblading weekends ever witnessed by man. This day had finally arrived. With it an unbelievable number of rollerbladers of all ages and nationality. Words fail to describe the awesomeness experienced by yours truly. Therefore I will not even attempt to bore you with more of my insane ramblings, but will let the pictures speak for themselves.
You don't just get the name 'From Hell' replaced with your actual, Dutch farmers name. This is a level of awesome that has to be worked hard for. You will have to put all principles and dignity aside, you will have to know no shame and you must act fearles at all times. Simply put, you have to not give a fuck and pull hardcore stunts on even more terrifying spots. So you can understand why us Dutch folk round here take great pride in the fact that Edwin 'From Hell' Wieringh is one of ours.
I was fortunate enough to meet Eric in person this summer while visiting the Adapt Brand crew in Holland and he is a skater to look out for. Eric skates with a raw energy, has an eye for unique spots, and is always down to smoke cigarettes or have a drink or two.
As you might have noticed this week we are spotlighting Rollerblading Amsterdam here on Be-Mag. Of course, we can't talk about Rollerblading in A-Dam without giving you an insight into the city's skate crew. So, what other people will you be meeting most likely when you decide to shred in Holland's capital - so here it is. A list of the Amsterdam Rollerbladers you might come across when you cruise through the city.
So you’ve come to Amsterdam and brought your rollerblades. Congratu-fucking-lations. But exactly how are you gonna get you and your sorry crew out of the coffee shops and into them boots? Conventional wisdom says you need a spot guide. But conventional wisdom talks out its ass. Spot guides are useless because spot guides will only tell you where you could go. Which isn’t nearly the same as knowing where you should go. So, to help you prevent wasting precious sober-time on second- or third-rate spots, we proudly present: Play your cards right! – The definitive Amsterdam spot guide.
Daan Hegt can hold it down on blades. He proved that in a big way by reaching the finals of the IMYTA Amsterdam back in 2005. Lately he's been focusing on his other passion: music. We checked in with the born and raised Amsterdammer to find out about his new project called Flash Grimey.
You can say what you want about Ivo Fighter and his undeniable skill to turn every conversation into an awkward silence. But this modern day incarnation of Jesus F. Christ is single-handedly responsible for breathing life into the difficult scene of inline blading in the Netherlands.
Here in Holland, we see Dick Heerkens as the Barack Obama of inline skating. And it’s not because he’s black or because he has a hot girlfriend. It’s not even because he is the president of rollerblading (that could be reason #2). Dick Heerkens is our Obama because he is so damn clever in front of the camera. Our perfect son-in-law-on-wheels is your best choice when you’re trying to introduce skating to a wider public, to get skating in the limelight of the media or to simply explain what a Fishbrain is to someone who’s never set foot in his local skatepark. Much like Barack, the 23-year old flow-rider for Rollerblade has a certain way with words that will make the most cautious girlfriends and auntie’s have respect for dropping hammers on kinkrails. Let Dick do the talking, people.
Without Bojd Vredevoogd the Amsterdam Week wouldn't have been possible. Whether it was in the middle of the night or early in the morning Bojd didn't hesitate one second to shoot pictures and contribute all his freetime for the Be-Mag Amsterdam Week 2012. Bojd is the man you can count on when you need a badass shot. Although it's pretty difficult to get a shot of the Red Light District the 26-year old Amsterdam local isn't the one to disappoint or give up. He will find a solution to get things done. Always down to motivate others to give their best and catching the right angles with his analogue camera. Marnix Haak had the chance to talk to him and to ask him about his motives and perceptions on rolling, photographing, girls, party, clothes etc.? Let's go beyond the surface, and investigate what's going on inside his mind. Interview. Start. Now.
This is Amsterdam's Golden Boy: Daan Hegt. Not only does he make skating look super nice, he has also created the soundtrack to this profile. Even though he is hardly skating these days , he still manages to kill it on the streets of Amsterdam. This lack of bladetime is mostly due to his efforts as a producer: together with his buddy Joel they are known to Amsterdam as 'Flash Grimey'. Go get their album at http://flashgrimey.bandcamp.com/
I just bought a DJI Phantom this week and took my first couple of flights around the neighbourhood with my GoPro Hero 3 Black attached to its undercarriage Unfortunately Holland is very windy, which made it hard to get smooth images right off the bat. I also filmed a small session with Edwin Wieringh, Hans Hardonk and Roel Verhoeven on Amsterdam’s newest skatespot, the Wittedewithstraat Curb. Here I shot some extra footage using a Canon 5d MarkII and the GoPro Hero 2. These were my first times going up with this new little camerahelicopter, and while filming a church in Ransdorp the heavy wind took the Phantom right out of my sights, but luckily the ‘return to home function’ worked perfect. It did give me a few moments of cold sweat though. I can’t wait to improve my flying skills, and start flying on some really hard to reach spots! My partner in crime Axel van Dijk has also just purchased the DJI Phantom, so expect much more fly edits to come some time soon.
I turn 36 today, and in honor of this milestone I present you with my profile from the Amsterdam 2012 video. My 37 edit will be off the chain, only drop kinkrails, and totally animated in 3D! -Remy Cadier
Dustin Werbeski, Nick Lomax and Richie Eisler had a few ice-cold sessions in Amsterdam. And the weather definitely didn't stop them from throwing down... Shot and cut by Richie Eisler with additional camera work by Nick Lomax, Cavin Brinkman, Dustin Werbeski and Mike Welland.
Yes, you got that right, vegan skates. Normally, Adapts are made in part of leather. But Wiboud only drinks water and nibbles on fruits and vegetables, doesn't ingest anything animal. And also doesn't want to wear leather. So he asked for a pair of vegan skates. And Adapt made it happen. That's real built to order, awesome! Shot and edited by Remco van der Pol.
Pascal Tan is one of the up and coming skaters from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, who is quickly building a name for himself with his clean style, fun personality, and professional attitude towards skating. He is on the Razors Flow team as well as on the Thisissoul Team, and can be found skating weekly in Amsterdam or other cities in the Netherlands. Footage for this remix edit was mainly shot in Amsterdam and Barcelona, almost all in 2011.
This Martin van Drunen Profile is part of my second skate DVD called 'Aorta' which was released in 2010. I never met Martin before this project, but only knew his skating from online edits and liked it a lot. So when we kidnapped him from his Rotterdam area and took him on several tours, we really got to know the guy. Martin is awesome, a very motivated pal. We love you sleepy! Normally I would say "yeah it was a great time in Barcelona thanks for everything" but there was no 'we' since you slept all the time. -Marnix Haak
Check out which news posts and articles were viewed the most in the last week of 2011.
Remco van der Pol takes you on a trip through Amsterdam with this sweet edit. Pretty sure there isn't every skater from Amsterdam in it but this pack of seasoned shredders definitely is a posse that knows how to blade. Enjoy!
In this edit, Remy Schmidt, Pascal Tan and Ryan Claus are out to destroy Amsterdam. Rippin' at the best spots these guys make this edit a pleasure to watch.
Together with Thisissoul skateshop, Robbert Snijder and Marnix Haak combined skating and biking into one big, unique contest called 'GET OUT THE WAY'. Peep the promo video to find out more about it!
