CJ Wellsmore has been a well known name in the blading world for a hot minute now, but only a few have gotten the chance to witness his blading prowess in person. This all changed when CJ got involved with Seba Skates, whom could provide him with the means to travel across the globe, and showcase his blading capability and to promote his yet to be released ‘Seba CJ Wellsmore Pro Skate’.
Dale Travers has been photographing skating since 1996 and has been travelling all over the world to shoot his photos. He is currently living in Brisbane, Australia, but has spent time living in London, and has seen large portions of Europe and the United States. He is currently working on improving his skill by working for a big commercial photography company, and meanwhile still has time to work on his personal projects.
Back in December, our Aussie correspondents Rob Ham and Simon Kelly hosted the national Australian Rollerblading Open in Canberra. While the northern hemisphere was freezing in the middle of winter, our southern counterparts were melting in the heat with record high temperatures paired with some super technical and intense skating. Check out what went down.
Those handsome devils at the Be-Mag Msgboard are proud to present the 30+ 2012 edit. Enter full screen mode, crank up the volume and apologize to your neighbors and co-workers later. Got a swear jar? Keep it, and a roll of quarters, close at hand and be amazed as these dusty, crusty, cranky and sometimes lanky mother fuckers grind, air and spin their way into your hearts.
Our Be-mag issue #38 cover boy and Australian powerhouse CJ Wellsmore has been skating hard down in Sydney during the cool winter months. He's put together some hard hitting clips for you to enjoy, and he took a few minutes to speak with Be-mag exclusively about his working life, skating and the possibility of a Vine Street Part 2.
It was awesome to see so much interest in this year's Victorian Titles among what is a swelling scene in Oz, with people from every single state both in attendance as well as registered competitors, and have everyone catch up with one another over the weekend and meet and roll with fresh and familiar faces from all over the country.
Although relatively new to the spotlight, CJ has had wheels under his feet since the beginning, and has been competing internationally for over a decade. Starting at such a young age and skating in the shadows of Australian legends like Cesar Mora and Matt Salerno has left CJ with an unmistakable natural style for skating, especially on transition. Since returning to his blades in 2005 – after a short break for beach lifestyle – in just a few years, CJ has refined his skills and established himself as one of the worlds top bladers. CJ's skills on the blades are undeniable, even to the outsider's eye, but what makes his skating even more enjoyable to watch is the fact you can tell how much he loves it. CJ still has the same passion for skating as he did when he first started, which I think is what's needed to inspire the next generation of skaters.
There are two park contests in the Australian rolling scene that have been happening every year for a long time, "The Aussie's" and "The Vics", The Australian Titles being the higher-profile national event that tends to showcase the finest in the country, and the Victorian Titles that hosts the best skating the state of Victoria has to offer, plus whoever else from around the country turns up, and this year was quite an interstate turnout. This tends to be the case these days when it comes to events put on by RollVic, a group of skaters who basically want to see events like these as an opportunity for the sport to grow, for skaters to come together, and for amazing skating to take place. This year's Vic Titles fulfilled exactly those goals, with four of the top five in the Open finals coming other capitol cities.
Danny's not a robot, he can take a fall, but he is a machine that shows no fear. His skating is the sort of skating that will get you the enders for two different montages in Be-Mag's 'Featuring The World' DVD a while back. It's the sort of skating where in a contest if he lands the big trick he's going for it'll win the prize for best trick of the day, and if he has a section in a video it'll be the most talked about section in that video. Not that long ago an edit was shared on the web featuring some old footage of Danny skating in his homeland of New Zealand, and the universally positive response throughout the skating world was a testament to his ability to defy what we've come to expect in a person's skating. He's a stuntman that takes risks, and if the spot doesn't call for a stunt he'll still throw down the hardest tricks he can think of. He won't stop until he's landed them, even with no camera around to capture it. Just be grateful Craig was there to capture this session, at the new Rampit Skatepark in Melbourne. But this is only a minute – he can go all night at this place, or any place for that matter. And then there's his Seven Rats part, which is a whole different ball park...
Matthias was obviously my first choice when choosing who should be featured in 'Seven Rats'. The first project I filmed with Matthias was his Rollerblade Solo Collective edit, which we pumped out in only about 5 sessions, this made me realize how quickly this guy can stack some decent clips. We became good friends through filming and skating together for the past year and a half which made it extremely easy to work with him on this project. Matthias' section is filmed mostly in the central business district of Melbourne, which gives the section a more urban and architectural feel, the same aesthetic of Matthias' previous video sections/ the Clip series. His creativity and effortless style is something that can only be gained through years of experience, as Jon Julio once said about Dustin Latimer 'He can make anything look good'. Matthias has been a blessing for the scene here in Melbourne, and a blessing for rollerblading in general. This 'left-over' edit is a collection of clips we filmed that weren't intended for use in his section, you will have to buy the DVD to see what he can really do.
