Zagreb has had a long love-hate relationship with rollerblading, ever since 1995. A few generations of skaters have come and gone, dropping rollerblading for more trendy stuff like skateboarding and drugs. There has always been a small group of people that kept things going, with edits, a few homemade videos and contests of all kinds. The first of the monthly rollerblader sessions in the indoor skatepark Supica was a call up, to see who's still alive and well.
Here in Holland, we see Dick Heerkens as the Barack Obama of inline skating. And it’s not because he’s black or because he has a hot girlfriend. It’s not even because he is the president of rollerblading (that could be reason #2). Dick Heerkens is our Obama because he is so damn clever in front of the camera. Our perfect son-in-law-on-wheels is your best choice when you’re trying to introduce skating to a wider public, to get skating in the limelight of the media or to simply explain what a Fishbrain is to someone who’s never set foot in his local skatepark. Much like Barack, the 23-year old flow-rider for Rollerblade has a certain way with words that will make the most cautious girlfriends and auntie’s have respect for dropping hammers on kinkrails. Let Dick do the talking, people.
The foundation for any growing skate community is a physical brick and mortar skate shop. The country of Malaysia is lucky to have one run by a long time dedicated blader. We checked in with Wheel Love to see how their business is growing and continuing to expand.
My name is Mikel Artega, I have started skating with Aritz Ortega and he is one of the guys I know best. Since we were kids, his passion has always been skating. Everyday we went rolling from sun up until the sun went down. Even when he was really young, you could notice that he was going to be "someone" because he always stands out over the others. He has the "gift" and a technique that you cannot see in other skaters. He rarely fails, but when he does, he learns from it an keeps on and on. He is a really focused rider.
I’ve been wanting to skate New York City for 16 years. Since the Brooklyn Banks were closed for construction, there was only one thing I was after: skitching anything that moved during rush hour.
The usual introductions start with the moment when you first met the guy to be interviewed. In this specific case I have to say, that I am not quite sure where I met Johannes the first time, but I am sure about the fact that as soon as I got to know him a little I hated him instantly. Never would I ever hang out with that guy. Life can teach you tough lessons and the one that I was taught when it comes to Johannes Zenk is, that you should never judge someone on first sight.
After suffering the assaults of unfavorable weather on the first 2 stops of the tour, we were hoping to find some good weather down south. It's June 20 and we spent the day on the road again. Torrential rain and weariness does not facilitate the task of our driver, Yannick. He must guide our small group safely to Annecy...
Once again under gray skies we left the English capital towards Dover in order to board the ferry which would take us back to the mainland. The ride was rather good; we played games and we talked about everything and nothing, laughing all the way. After crossing 5 countries and spending approximately 10 hours on the water and the road, we arrived in Germany. Cologne was the second stop of this tour, a destination that also included only one day of skating so we had to be productive.
If you've never met Ben Harmanus before, from the outset he can seem a little bit scary. A man covered in tattoos who's always dressed in black and constantly throwing himself at rails all over the globe. For those who do know him, they realize this is simply a front for one of the most caring and passionate skaters in our scene. Ben spoke with Be-mag to discuss the current state of Chimera, his collaboration with the dutch boot company Adapt and the future and beyond of skating.
It's about 6am in the morning, I am with Nicolas Auroux and Mathieu Heinemann in this train bringing us to the meeting spot of the 3rd edition of the famous Nomades Tour. This is the full coverage of the Mettle Games 2011 inline skate category held at the East Coast Extreme Park in Singapore. Filmed in three days from Friday 9th December to Sunday 11th December. The fiirst day was horrible due to the rain and everybody had to wait it out until the announcement was made that the qualifying rounds for inline got cancelled and everybody was automatically qualified. The second and the third day respectively were quite good. The nice and sunny weather made sure it was possible for all the skaters to ride their lines perfectly.
