The Texas Skate Series San Antonio competition started off the way all San Antonio comps do, meeting up at San Pedro park. It was originally a ledge spot in the middle of town that eventually was designated as a "skate park" of sorts where they added a nice p-rail, curve ledge box and the famous angle iron ledge. It is not much but it is a perfect meet up spot for a competition like this. Being that the comp was on Easter weekend there were already people camped out with tents trying to secure their spot of the park for the Easter festivities.
Brian Moore is about to release his new DVD 'The City Never Sleeps'. After more than two years of filming for the video and a $10,000 investment Brian has finally come to an end! Watching the teasers and considering the positive feedback the film got after its premiere at the Hoedown Contest in Dallas you can be sure that this release will get your ass up from the sofa and strap on your skates. Although Brian said that he did this video mostly for himself, we think that this video is made for everyone. But decide for yourself: an in depth interview, two trailers and Brady Johnston's section from the video should provide a good basis for your decision on whether or not to get the flick! All of this after the jump…
Phillip Gripper is one of those skaters that has never gotten the shine he really deserves. Now at the ripe age of 28 years young, Phil is not only skating the best he's ever skated, but finally getting the recognition that has long been coming to him. Many people know Phil best from his years of being a counselor at Woodward. He actually taught a lot of the current up and coming names in blading how to do most of their tricks. Phil is the type of guy that knows exactly what he likes. Anything from food, to music, to skating tricks, Phil likes what he likes and doesn't compromise for anything or anyone. So when Phil told me we had to drive an extra 3 hours out of our way on a recent South Carolina trip to skate a spot in his hometown of Florence, I knew it would be worth it.
So, this is it? The 15th and final Showdown at the Hoedown, or at least at the current location. It's been a great ride, and I agree it may be time to move on. I've managed to attend all but the first Hoedown, and every year I am impressed by not only the level of skating, but the level of community this event brings. It might start with the fact that Eisenberg's Skatepark is a family run park and Miss Vicky, Arlo's mom, is in attendance cheering on the skaters with the rest of us. Whatever it is I want to personally thank everyone who has ever been to a Hoedown be it to skate, watch, or just get drunk in the parking lot – we call it tailgating in Texas – it's been a lot of fun.
The 15th Annual Hoedown competition went down this weekend at Eisenbergs Skatepark in Plano, TX, where local hero John Sullivan took the win. Thanks to Jason Reyna, we've got some amazing pictures shot by Randy Edwards for you!
The first ever Donate and Skate charitable rollerblading event took place in Cedar Park, Texas on April 16th 2011. The goal of the contest was to provide rollerblades to those interested in the sport, but who might not have the funds readily available to buy brand new skates. Instead of a contest entry fee, competitors donated used skates, wheels or frames. Then, during the contest, the nice staff of Rec N Roll Skateshop helped match up the pieces and assembled skates for those in need. It was great seeing so many kids excited about picking out their own parts and trying on their new skates. A few brave kids even tried rolling the skatepark for their first time – it was a beautiful sight!
Pat Leal caught up with Texas' finest John Sullivan. Check out what John has to say. Apart from the interview, Pat also put together a nice edit giving you an idea of John's skating talent. Peep it.
« Hoedown never disappoints ». In only a few words, Arlo captured the spirit of what is still one of the greatest events in this industry. Despite what seemed to be a much smaller crowd this year, and a course which hasn't ...
In the past few days, people from all over the world got into town to attend the last major WRS event before the championship finals this next week-end in Rye, New Hampshire, will take place. Driving, flying or even riding shitty Greyhound bu...
I’ve known Kendall Ware for about ten years now, and he’s always been a super dedicated skater. I can remember little grom Kendall always at the park trying to learn new tricks to put in his trick bag, and all that hard work and dedication really shows in his skating today. Whether it’s skating a little ledge or a huge down rail or even a gap every now and then, Kendall is always down to have a good time, hang out with rollers and do everything you did… and better… but switch, too. I’m half kidding. Kendall is a great guy and a great asset to rollerblading today. He’s always nice to the little rollers and willing to give some pointers, and he’ll never give up on rolling. Bottom line; super nice guy, super technical skater, been in the game a long time (OG). Kendall Ware. Love always, Jaysin Williams
Wheel Scene again shows everyone how it's done with their new article on Texas blader Keaton Newsom. Very well written, very insightful piece.
In the past year the Austin scene has been thriving. So many bladers from other cities are starting to gather here and the level of blading has gone up because of it. In the past, every weekend it seemed like Mason and I had to scrap to find one or two other guys to blade with, now we usually all gather together Friday nights and enter the weekend ready to get shit done. When I started this video I wanted to focus on our scene for once as opposed to filming different bladers from different cities. We've still been traveling non-stop but it's nice to know you're gonna be filming with the cast week in and week out. The Austin scene is the best it's been in a while in my opinion and it's bc of the guys in this video. -Anthony Medina
This is Mason Richard's section from 'The City Never Sleeps', a video by Brian Moore. Mason kills it, as per usual...
When Cody first moved to Austin we began filming for his section, but after his luck ran out couch surfing, he had to move back home due to lack of funds and a place to stay. Maybe a month later Cody came back... so we had to start over. Here's the result. Enjoy. -Anthony Medina
'Texas Blading' is an online rollerblading short film covering all of the talent across the state of Texas. This film highlights rollerbladers from Dallas to Austin to Houston and in between. Be-mag board member Kevin Little out of Texas is bravely entering the blading industry with a new company called Sic Urethane. Kevin sent in this video section from his video "Classic".
'Dag Days' is my latest all Texas video featuring full sections on Ian Freunscht, Josh Glowicki, Logan Harlan, Fritz Peitzner, Ryan Rasmussen, Cody Sanders, and Rob Zbranek. Also featuring Brady Johnston, Troy Maimone, Mason Richard, William Isaac, Julian Isaac, Josh Navarifar, and many more. DVDs are available now! If your shop of choice doesn't have Dag Days, tell them to carry it! -Anthony Medina
'Dallas Days' is a montage made to try and bring back the old feeling of Dallas excitement full of big sessions and a wholesome scene rather then the going out solo and filming individual sections, which it has recently become. The Dallas Scene, to me, was an inspiration growing up and lately I have been watching it slowly disperse and no longer have that feel of a scene but more of a few individuals. Making this edit has showed me that the scene here in Dallas, Texas is as big as it ever was and still going hard in the paint. -Kristian Payne

This year they build up a new obstacle. The double rainbow box on top of the big quarter. There will be also brand new GOST and Eisenberg shirts especially designed for the 14th Showdown at the Hoedown.
The admission "charge" to enter the contest is a donated pair of used skates, frames, helmets/pads or wheels. We will be giving the skates to kids interested in blading, but do not have the funds available to buy new skates. The top three skaters will be awarded prizes from our sponsors. So go into that closet, break out those dusty skates and put them into a needy kids hands.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is that time a year again. The 15th Annual Hoedown Invitational at Eisenbergs Skatepark in Plano, Texas goes down October 28-30. Another fifty competitors will arrive from all around the world for one of the most memorable and legendary skate comps to happen dating back to the mid-'90s.
