Your question - Does Rollerblading need THEM? I'd say there's 2 things to consider. The boot itself - probably not. Nothing new there, but it's not a negative thing to have options and hardware for people who want something else.

THEM as a brand though - I think one thing Julio is good at is building hype, building a brand, pushing out high quality content, getting the right people involved in projects, getting skaters excited and connected. So, yeah in that sense I think blading would be a lot poorer without Julio doing Valo all these years, and I'd expect nothing less from Them. The Valo skates were kind of expensive for what they were, but we got 5 (6?) amazing videos and countless amazing edits and content - easily the highest quality, most consistent output in the industry I'd say - and that impacts everyone in some way, even if not directly.

So yeah, I'd say we do need Them, or at least we're better off with it, than not.
Question: I wonder if THEM has outsold K2 in this last year?

      USD - Aeon, Sway, VII, Carbon/Carbon Free/Gawds, Xsjado/Shadow
Razors - SL, Shift, Cult, still some Genesys floating about
Roces - V13 (Still some Valo's floating about too)
K2 - Front Street and Unnatural
Rollerblade - New Jack and still some Solo's floating about for now
      Them - 908
Remz - OS and HR models
Seba - CJ's etc (but for how long?)
      Trigger - Cudots
Salomon - Still available through eBay and Blade Trade. Lots of people still skating them.

Am I missing anything obvious? Probably!

I don't get K2, I mean last year was really interesting when they would make so many prototypes after testing and feedback from people like mushroom guys etc, and also create an amazing frame… yet it's like they don't see the merit in marketing and having a team? I don't get it… I want them to keep making stuff as it's quality gear, but no one seems to use their stuff!, which is hardly surprising.

K2 with no team means they dont exist.

as for Valo, I never bought valo because the skates dont fit my fat feet...but I sure did but every video they ever made.

The reason I want to support Them is because they will ensure quality content. Also, I love team videos where there is a common belief and support system in what they are doing. I love chill skate videos too, but the "Team" videos always meant more to me. Speaking of team vids, why the hell hasn't USD made a team video in years even though they have always been stacked? It's just weird that they or their riders wouldn't want to make something epic. They could also make a few bucks.

It's crazy seeing all of those options and feeling like the only skates I'd even consider are M12s, Cults, and Them. Also feeling like it's likely I'll skate Them a few times and keep them around fully set up as loaner skates for that occasional interested kid at the park. Hearing the initial impression they're overly flexy is a bad sign for my tastes. Would be cool if they were able to have some different plastic hardness models if they continue to sell enough to make multiple runs.

Agreed there's a whole lot of options there that I would never even consider buying, but at least there's a bit of variety and hopefully something for everyone. A simple hardboot is all I'd want too and I'm glad there's another option available in Them. Looking forward to seeing/hearing more reviews. Still haven't pulled the trigger though.

They do flex a lot. But once you tighten the top strap, they become highly responsive and supportive. Already liking THEM better than V13s.

Yeah, I find all skates are flexy until you tighten them. Go figure.

Got to try on some mediums today. I have a slim foot and wear a size 10 shoe and a size 8-9 toe cut Valo. The Valo are snug on me but I like snug. The medium Thems felt huge on me. Not way too long but very very wide for me. Curious to try the smalls with a downsizing liner though I'm thinking these may not be for me. I was also not a huge fan of the soul being much more narrow at the heel than at the front (which is really noticeable). Plus the liners are shit imo, especially the oddly narrow tongue.
They do look better in person though. I tried the blacks

lolz. Brace yourself for years of THEM setups posts. Valos didn't fit my feet great. I expect the same issue with THEM. I'll be between the small and medium, forced into the medium shell prob.

Agreed about them looking better in person. In fact, they look really good. Plus I posted a photo of them and all sorts of friends who don't even skate liked the photo. Women, skateboarders, musicians, the lot.

I'm coming from a US size 10 v13/m12. I've skated that shell for over a decade. I also wear a US size 10 shoe. I got the medium 908's. Just a side note..the shell says 8/9 on the inside and I imagine that's how it was originally marketed. But I can also skate an 8/9 cult with a 10 liner so...

The medium 908 liner was wayyy too snug. I bet if you wear a US size 9/9.5 shoe they'll be perfect. The toe area doesn't seem very padded nor does it stretch at the end like on the v13 liner. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed about it. Especially since I was told by a certain ginger "insider" that the liner was as big if not slightly bigger than the size 10 v13 liner. LIES. Anyways, I'm gonna call around and see if the large liner fits the medium shell but this might have been the push I need in order to get intuitions. I am in my 30's after all. I may try to stretch these out and break them in best I can in the meantime though. Maybe the large amounts of padding near the cuff/ankle will go down and make everything fit well. But long sessions are probably a bad idea at first. I just really like the look of the stock liner as well as the padding around the top of the cuff. I tried throwing in my v13 liners but no dice...everything fit fine but the pressure points from the top of the cuff were too much to handle while skating. Kind of gave me perspective about the design of the stock 908 liner. Oh and like every stock liner, the insoles are a joke. Change them immediately if you care about your feet.

Onto the good and most important stuff. I really really like this shell. It fits my foot better than the v13. Whereas in the v13 there was excess space in the toe from where the shell is narrow, the medium seems to wrap around my feet/toes perfectly making for a more controlled fit/feeling overall. The heel is raised but it's not as prominent feeling as in the v13. It's a better feel or I may just be experiencing that new-skate euphoria. Time will tell. Also, they look smaller on me than my v13's and they're really not much wider looking either. Definitely not as bulky as skinned valos.

I've only done a few souls because of an injury but the soles felt/slid great. If you're coming from valos/m12's there probably wont be much of a learning curve. The boot flex didn't seem that different either. I dig the eyelets, especially the extra ones up top, they really help to add support. Honestly, they feel like Valomons. I think I'm going to really like them if the plastic holds up and I find the proper liner setup.

The buckles are nice, no complaints there. I'll miss the memory buckles on the m12's, assuming I don't go back to skating those. It would be nice to be an ambassador though. Haaaa

I'm going to get a backslide groove in these soles and try to do some tricks that involve heavy impact and lots of flexing before giving my final verdict. But so far it's looking nice minus the liner.

I imagine there will be people like Josh who these won't work for sizing-wise but every skate doesn't have to work for everyone. It's all about finding what fits you and allows you to skate your best. Right guys?! (said in super corny tone)

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

I think the memory lock buckles are going to be the thing I miss the most about the M12. I've had zero issues skating them throughout the years. I was thinking of finding a way of getting them on there or maybe even swapping cuffs if possible.

I'll get mine this Saturday during Jan's VT Blade & Camp trip!

I don't see how that could help - the bigger liner will have more padding, more length and more width. If you cram it into the smaller shell you'll just be bunching up a load of foam. It'll feel smaller if anything - that's my experience at least. I'd try modding the stock liner if after a few sessions it doesn't break in. It wouldn't be hard to cut the liner up a little and either add some neoprene in the toe or just cut it so it opens up more. It's either that are a liner with thinner, denser foam.

I did. Fingers are tightly crossed in the hopes of THIM fitting properly. From what I've been reading about the fit, I'm pretty optimistic.

I got mine today and had a quick skate. For sizing reference, I'm an 8 1/2 or 9 US in most shoes, and an 8-9 shell in valos fit me pretty well except it was a little narrow. The small them shells almost fit perfect, but my toes are right up on the front of the skate. I forgot to grab my shock absorbers to put in, so they may pull my toes away from the shell a bit. Otherwise, good fit. I think for a lot of people these are actually gonna help , it seemed like the regular shell sizing in aggressive skates was actually catching too many people in the middle of sizes, and the extra width and lack of rigidity around the laces helps these accommodate a wider range of sizes.

First impression: Super solid skates. The souls are really good too, having a one piece is a nice change. The plastic is definitely pretty flexy, and the lacing system (mainly all the space between the eyelets) leads to a lot of forward flex, so thats all gonna come down to personal preference for pretty much everyone at this point. They look real good in person in black, nobody had the Ivory's at the session tonight but the black ones were real nice. Buckle is fine, no sounds anywhere on the boot at all, the laces are better than valo stock laces but due to the lacing system, they can have a huge impact on how the skates fit so getting a some quality laces you like could have a massive effect on how these feel. The liner felt pretty good right off the bat but it wasn't a real rigorous skate so hopefully I'll see how it holds up over a longer session soon.

The Loco review of them is a bit odd, he puts Intuitions in them straight away, a $200 liner, which is obviously going to change the entire feel of the skate. Also he's a UK 7.5 and says the small stock liner is a bit too small for him, which leads me to believe it's gonna be too small for me too. Really didn't wanna have to change the liner in these.
