Back to Blading is live with an unboxing of the Them Skates. Honestly has anything this exciting happened in blading in the last decade?

Hope you are not expecting any pure critiques. seems the dicksucking train has loaded up and left the station with these... or them.

i'm just really hoping for a good soulplate review, and maybe even a rundown of what other souls may fit the 908 boot, and what current boots the them souls may be compatible with. i think many people might find that info interesting, and may even help drive sales more.

Unless there's something actually "wrong" with them, like they break or are made from the wrong material, you probably won't see much beyond "I really like them" or "I didn't really like them but they are fine" because there's little inherently right about a soul-plate - look at the vast array of options we've had in the past of souls and backslides and people swear by even the weirdest options. It's either right for you or it isn't....or for most people it's like "whatever".

They'll sell out on hype alone. I've been close to ordering them a few times and 1) I don't need new skates and 2) As I've said before I don't really like the look of them! I think the white M12's are much nicer.

I do hope they do well so the brand is able to move forward and pros get paid, but unfortunately I just cant get excited because I don't see it going beyond a situation where they are just using available molds. Even if everyone skated Them skates there simply is not enough revenue in aggressive for Them to develop a new mold. Maybe I'm wrong.. I don't know. I will just keep my mouth shut and let this play out. And at that price I am for sure going to get a pair to try out.

Hopefully they'll at least get access to other available molds. I guess you're right about the price and giving them a go.

I can't imagine a new mold or using other open-molds is even on the agenda. If the skates work fine, there's little reason to spend thousands on new molds. I reckon we could see a new cuff MAYBE or just some additional sizes, but Julio already said there were 4 sizes for this mold and next size up was huge and ugly and he junked it. Maybe there's a way to mod the existing molds to suit other sizes - the liners seem kinda thick so maybe a thinner liner could allow for bigger sizing in the large shell.

My prediction: A few years at least of additional colourways/pro models with no material changes to the boot or soul. Minor changes to the liner (neoprene toe hopefully). More focus on content and brand than on tech. I'm not even mad. If the skate works, it works.

It would be nice to see this mold refined.
I would love to see the bottom of the shell cut off at the wavey part so the souls connected there and the area where a midstrap would go be trimmed down as well.

He's pretty much said that he'd like to skin them in the futureā€¦ but I think we're all done with that thing aren't we?

I wonder at what stage boot companies are seen as the new wheel companies in the sense of "eugh, not another one" and "spreading too little butter over too much bread" - asides from helping Julio out, does rollerblading really "need" THEM? It's great to have options of course, but with the industry being so small I wonder if it'd be best that there were less companies and thus each receiving more share of the profit and being able to genuinely support riders.

Alternate reality - Maybe THEM will go late 90s/early 00s O.G. one day and get the Classic Throne mould with re-worked Allen Key hardware and a one-piece soul. I'd like that shit.

The Throne mold is dead, and even if someone revived it, the only market for that skate would be for a full-OG setup with Juice heels and original tumors and non-UFS frames.

Your question - Does Rollerblading need THEM? I'd say there's 2 things to consider. The boot itself - probably not. Nothing new there, but it's not a negative thing to have options and hardware for people who want something else.

THEM as a brand though - I think one thing Julio is good at is building hype, building a brand, pushing out high quality content, getting the right people involved in projects, getting skaters excited and connected. So, yeah in that sense I think blading would be a lot poorer without Julio doing Valo all these years, and I'd expect nothing less from Them. The Valo skates were kind of expensive for what they were, but we got 5 (6?) amazing videos and countless amazing edits and content - easily the highest quality, most consistent output in the industry I'd say - and that impacts everyone in some way, even if not directly.

So yeah, I'd say we do need Them, or at least we're better off with it, than not.

I doubt more boot companies will start popping up. Julio had the cash and the connections to pull this off and even then they've got a standard boot with a new soul, we're lucky they managed to get a new soul on there. Whether we need them or not is irrelevant now cause they're already here, and judging by Instagram and Facebook setup pics they're gonna be pretty popular! What are our options these days?

                                USD - Aeon, Sway, VII, Carbon/Carbon Free/Gawds, Xsjado/Shadow
Razors - SL, Shift, Cult, still some Genesys floating about
Roces - V13 (Still some Valo's floating about too)
K2 - Front Street and Unnatural
Rollerblade - New Jack and still some Solo's floating about for now
                                Them - 908
Remz - OS and HR models
Seba - CJ's etc (but for how long?)
                                Trigger - Cudots
Salomon - Still available through eBay and Blade Trade. Lots of people still skating them.

Am I missing anything obvious? Probably!
